Either your car is over heating because of a bad water pump or there is a leak.

I have a 2003 VW Passat. I keep getting a warning signal that says, "Stop, Check Coolant". According to the temperature gauge, the car is not getting hot. However, at times I do hear a...

A "check coolant" message is generated when a coolant sensor (the Passat has more than one, I believe) returns an abnormal reading. That can occur when there's no coolant circulating (eminent engine seizure) or if the sensor is stuck in an air pocket.
A bubbling/gurgling sound suggests that your cooling system has some air in it, and that might be generating the error messages. If you have just flushed your system, it's possible that someone didn't take the time to purge the system of all air as new coolant was introduced. However, if the system is more or less completely full of coolant, these should eventually work themselves out. Keep an eye on the coolant reservoir tank and keep topping it off if you see the level going down.
A second possibility is that one of your coolant sensors is going bad. I just had to replace one on a 2002 Passat with only 51,000 miles on it. A bad sensor will also return odd readings that trigger warning lights.
A third, much more expensive, possibility is that you are developing a weak spot in one of your head gaskets (I'm assuming you have a Passat with a V6; the 4-cylinder engine will have only 1 head gasket). In that situation, hot exhaust gases may be leaking into your coolant, causing localized hot spots and possibly triggering the error message that you've been receiving.

My 2002 vw passat check coolant light is on. How do I add coolant and what coolant should I use?

There is a coolant reservoir on the driver side of the engine compartment. You just need to take the cap off and add coolant to the max lever when the car is cold. Never open it with the engine hot. Then you need to use the coolant type G12. You won't find it anywhere else but directly from the dealer. Its very important to use the this type of coolant so you dont damage any component of your cooling system. You're be paying about $17.50 per galon of G12 or price may be different depending of which state you're at.

Temperature light came on 2002 VW Passat wagon backing out of garage today, slight burning smell. Returned after 2 miles. Have experienced this smell on and off since oil & filter change several weeks...

You can see the coolant level by looking through the opaque round coolant reservoir. It should be just over the middle. There's a line indication proper level. Orange Dexcool meets the VW specification and is generally available. The rear coolant flange can warp and seep over time and leaks onto hot parts. That's probably why you smell it.

Hi guys,

sounds like you have some bubbles trapped in there somewhere. try bleeding the cooling system by letting the car idle with the radiator cap off. when the engine reaches operating temp the thermostat should open, and you should see a drop in coolant level. top it off, and wait to see if more air bubble come up, and repeat until you;re satisfied that there are no more air bubbles left.

Where do i add coolant?

The overflow container marked coolant. Make sure you do not mix antifreeze...very important....place the vw reccomended and you will save lot of money in the long run. If mixed you could have a chemical reaction in resulting clogging of the heater core and no heat...expense of an exess of $1000.00 to repair vs an additional $9.0 extra for the g12 antifreeze..prestone all purpose is probably $$11.00..good luck

ABS and coolant are unrelated unless there is a problem with the ECM (engine control module) or instrument panel. Is the red coolant warning sign for coolant level or temperature?

With ABS if there is any failure with any brake electronic component (sensor, motor, or fluid level etc) the ABS will shut down completely and flash the light. If the light is on or flashing the ABS is non functioning.

I need better information on the coolant and ABS to give better information.
