How do you check TPS sensor


That really depends on the car you are trying to check on. The older cars didn't even have a TPS. The best way to see an early indication of the TPS going bad, is how the vehicles is running or responding to your input. First, I suggest putting the vehicle on a diagnostic machine. Go to your nearest Autozone and they will do a check for free. There are 2 indicators that can tell you if you need to replace your TPS, or your IPV.It is easy to confuse the 2 because they kind of do the same thing when your car is running. TPS, or Throttle Positioning Sensor, effects what your throttle does when you depress the accelerator. For example: If your car is idling smoothly and you step on the gas peddle, and the RPM's drop quickly before they rev up. That is a good indication of a bad TPS. IPV, or Idle Positioning Valve, controls your RPM's as the vehicle is idling. If the IPV is bad, then you will experience rough, and fluxuating RPM's when you don't press on the gas peddle. Sometimes, if the IPV is bad, it will cause the vehicle to lunge forward while the vehicle is in gear.

When i put car in park, the car lunges forward about 6 inches


it sounds like the car maybe idled to high. If you put your car in gear and it seems like it wants to take off. i ts idled to high.

Then your idle is probably a little to high. You should also check your brakes and see if there goo too. Hope this helps!!

High idle car lunges forward


If you have a high idle and lunging...that usually happens when there is a leak on the intake manifold side allowing more air to get in, then the computer senses the increase in air and adds more fuel. There in turn has to be one more failure in the system to allow the idle to run away, may be a tps sensor (throttle position sensor) or something down the line.

I have a 2004 2500 hd silverado with duramax engine. the vehicle intermidentaly lunges with air conditioning on and brake applied.


It sounds like the computer is compensating the idle when the a/c compressor cycles on. The compressor cycles on and off when the a/c is on, which is normal. When the compressor kicks on, it puts an additional load on the engine, which in turn lowers the idle, especially at idle sitting at, say, a red light. Having the brakes on also adds another load to the engine as it uses a lot of engine vacuum to keep the brakes applied. When the engine surges, like your describing, that is the trucks computer sensing the additional load put on the engine, and is adjusting the idle higher to compensate for it. Theres really not a lot you can do about it, unless maybe switch off the a/c at red lights. I should add that if it's a severe "lunge" or surge, enough that your fighting to keep the truck from moving, I would check for maybe a vacuum leak, or even possibly take the truck to a dealer and have it checked over. Hope this helps.

sounds like your transmission. if the fluid is red or in your case, a really dark red almost brown, then it is your transmission. you might be able to catch it in time to have the leak fixed and save the transmission.
