Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Driving my jeep 5.9 and it just died, came to a stop and tried to start it , it cranks over and runs a little bit then dies , all the lights work hmmmm?

When was last tune up? Plugs, wires, all filters & fluids - especially fuel filter??? I'd start there and run a good fuel system cleaner through it.

Try cleaning the throttle valve and idle speed control motor with throttle valve cleaner and then diconnect the battery for 5 minutes and drive it for a few days.

try turning the idle screw counterclockwise. #5 in the pic below.

while its idling try wiggling the three large wires going into the pcm. if it stalls you need a pcm because inside solder joints are broken. common problem

GREAT INFORMATION...

however, you were not clear about fuel pressure

was fuel pressure OK before and during the concern...30psi and have you check flow

PLUS...during the concern are you loosing SPARK? Coil is great suspect!

while the code for the crank sensor concerns me I'd start with the most common Jeep concern...the ASD (auto shut down realy)

when you start testing again remember to check the CKP output at the sensor and the CKP input at the computer...you might have a CKP circuit that is worn out

You need to get it diagnosed. You may have a ASD relay issue, fuel pump issue, or crank sensor issue. These all could cause this symptom

Eng. dies while driving and starts running again


Crank position sensor.If it's a 4.0 its on the bellhousing flange at the back of the block right where block meets trans.It senses the cranks rotation to fire plugs and other stuff.If it goes open when hot or from vibrational fatigue (don't let anyone B.S. you they go bad ALOT!) engine management thinks the engine has stopped and shuts everything down,when engine shuts down the absense of vibration complete it's circuit again and it continues running till it gets in the mood again.Had one of these that made a 250mi.trip then dies and would restart after about 5 min

Starting problem


are you using the original key for the car because it sounds like a theft system problem I had a 2000 jeep that did the same thing it would start for a bit and then quit on me found out that the key has a chip in it so the key i got cut works for the lockes but cant use to run the car
