Hi

Black smoke from exhaust means the engine runs very rich - too much gasoline goes to the engine which most likely means there is something wrong with fuel- or ignition system. For example this may happen when one or two cylinders misfire.
- blue or white-blue smoke means burning engine oil.

You can check for spark by looking at the tach needle making small movements while cranking the engine over. If the needle make small movements then you have spark.
Pull any fuses to deflood. Also holding the gas pedal to the floor while cranking prevents the fuel injectors from working till the engine actually starts up.

It is suggested to buy a can of starter fluid. Spray in the air filter for no more than two seconds.
Put the pedal to the floor. Start the engine. Repeat till it does start. Also pull the injectors out attached to the fuel rail, pressurize the system(fuel pump jumper plug), and watch for leaks. Maybe try leaving them overnight with a dish under them to see if they slowly leak.
Or send them out to get tested.

However there are various reasons as to why your car cranks but won't start, please check the bellow links related to your query:-

I ran out of gas. Put in gas. Now it's turning over but not starting. Should I change the plugs.

If your fuel pump is in the gas tank the fuel pump is cooled and lubricated by the gas. If you run out of gas and keep trying to start it many times you can damage the fuel pump. If you have a older car you can try putting a little gas in the carburetor and see if it cranks, if it cranks with gas in carburetor you know it is a lack of fuel problem. You might try spraying starting fluid in air filter but to much can damage your engine. Some links below may provide some help.

Your vehicle fuel pump can run and pump gas but depending on your vehicle you may not have enough fuel pressure to run. I would check your fuel pump fuse and relay and fuel inertia switch/fuel pump kill switch if you have one. I do not know why running out of gas would cause them to fail but it is something to check.

My van sedona 2005 after i stop it,it won't restart unless i press a few time on the gas pedal ,and also runs rough a bit what could be the cause of it.

May be the starter or fuel pump. Might not be getting gas after turning it off. the gas may be settling to fast into the fuel pump and none staying in the engine. My friends SUV does not start unless you pump the gas pedal. Not an expert but its what i know it could possibly be.

Car will not start fual pump shut off swich is

ok so now check for spark by removing a spark plug wire and sticking a srcew driver into it and then putting it next to metal on engine but not touching have some one crank it over and watch the screw driver for spark. sounds like one of the two crucial elements is missing you have gas and now you need spark to run.

Won't ''rev'' up when pressing on gas pedal.

The most common cause of this is a defective Mass Airflow Sensor, it is located in the air intake hose to the engine, here is a picture. this sensor will not in most cases turn on the check engine light.

When i crank my 96 taurus sometimes it floods out and wont crank.

Too much gas won't make it hard to crank. To thick oil or not enough antifreeze will. If it's flooding, slowly pump the gas pedal to the floor 3 times and then with the pedal held tight against the floor, crank the engine. This will open the butterfly wide open and will blow the extra gas out.
