Question about 2007 Toyota RAV4

Battery acts dead, get a jump start and it runs fine. Battery load test shows battery and alternator are good. Could it be a bad relay?

The battery may have a bad cell. If a jump gets the vehicle started, replace your battery and you should be fine.

time to stop messing with auto zone as the testing is not showing the fault
The battery could be again faulty as there is no guarantee of battery life so have it tested again with a load tester
Take the car to an auto electrician for a full charging circuit test which includes the alternator , voltage regulator and rectifier and wiring
what you are doing is spot testing and getting frustrated
the problem could be a faulty starter relay or ignition switch

taking the battery leads of a running alternator is one sure way of destroying the alternator
if you think a battery is dead you have it load tested and replaced if it doesn't meet the test
what you should be doing is taking the vehicle to an accredited auto electrician and having the battery load tested and the alternator and voltage regulator professionally tested for proper operation

I will throw out a few ideas, maybe someone else had the identical problem and solved it. With the gauges spiking, you have electricity running around trying to find a place to ground. This is not the whole problem though, because something is staying connected long enough to drain your battery.
There are several Alternator tests, Voltage output, and the Diode tests. You can get good readings on Voltage and still have bad diodes. Diodes act like little gates to keep electric flowing in one direction. When these little gates fail, it allows the battery to discharge through the Alternator.
Your problem sounds also like a stuck Relay. Relays work differently than many people imagine. Relays not only connect the HOT positive wires, but also connect one Negative wire to another Negative wire. When the contact points inside the Relay stick, a Negative wire may stay connected when the vehicle is turned off. Same thing for Positive wires in the Relay.
"Not starting" when shut off is confusing. Do you mean it cranks normally and does not fire up? or do you mean the Battery is dead and the starter will not crank the engine? If the Battery is too low to crank the engine immediately after driving, then the Alternator is not charging while you are driving and is not showing a discharge.
You may simply have a bad Ignition switch. The Alternator needs power from the ignition switch and it gets into the Alternator through the small plastic clip that goes into the Alternator case. Shorting inside the Ignition switch can also affect the Relays powered through the switch. The Ignition switch would be a good place to start to make sure all circuits are getting reliable power and that when the key is out, power is really off.
So have Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys do a Diode test on the Alternator on the truck. Its free and doing it on the truck can reveal truck wiring problems that will not show up on a bench check.

Alternators have a built in regulator that tells them when to turn on and off. Just because the alternator is working, does not mean the regulator is turning it on and off when it should, in turn, over charging or undercharging your battery ruining it. The problem is you could also have a short somewhere that is draining the battery when it gets damp. The starter or a bad battery cable is usually the culprit here. A bad battery cable can mimic a dead battery, and when you jump it you put enough power to allow it to "jump" the bad spot, But also put a major strain on the cars electronics. So start with new cables, a 96 is 15 years old. Inspect the starter for any sign of corrosion or other damage at the same time. If this doesn't help, demand a replacement alternator. 98% of rebuilds are good, but 2% aren't.

Sounds like the alternator / voltage regulator is malfunctioning or there is a bad connection to / from the alternator / battery.

Do you have a multimeter so you could test the alternator -- or could you take the car to a parts store such as Auto Zone where they could test the alternator for you ?

Pontiac G5 only starts when jumped. Battery tested out fine, Alternator tested out fine. Not running any codes...Now what?


Was the battery "load tested"? lotso f auto parts stores just test for 12 Volts across the terminals. You ned to have it load tested. Thats where a load simulating the starter is put on the battery. I have a carbon pile tester that places 500 Amps on the battery. many times I have seen a battery show 12 Volts and fail the load test due to a dead cell.

If it's a side terminal battery, it's really hard to get a good clean connection.

The fuses and relays are on the back fire wall under the hood.Just remove the plastic cover.This is not a fuse problem but more than likely a bad battery or charging system problem.Check the battery.Have it load tested and have your charging system tested also.Make sure all the cable connections on the battery and alternator are all clean and tight.Hope this helps.Good luck.

The alternator is still good but everytime i jump start the car it makes it half a block and dies.


Your alternator is charging however it is not still good if it does what you are stating. Also what is the condition of your battery if you have to keep jumping your car? Car batteries don't like to be completely discharge and may not hold there charge again once run dead and may need replaced... Alternator has to have be bad as it needs to be load tested to best determine it's true output. Most auto parts stores do a run test and no load test. Load test will tell amperage rate and true quality of an alternator.
