Question about 2005 Chevrolet Malibu
These cars are famous for this , i have repaired a few with the same problem, this problem is due to a bad brake light switch, this switch is located under the dash on the brake pedal bracket, if you follow the brake pedal arm up you will see the switch, the arm is what controls the on and off postion of this switch, this is easy to replace and not costly, the problem is that the switch need to be programed at the dealer. the problem is when you replace it the lights may not work , you may have to press the pedal down hard to turn brake lights on, when they program it they program when the lights turn on, i had never heard of such a thing until i replaced one and couldnt figure out why the lights didnt work unless i pushed the pedal down hard, good luck and hope this helps.
