Question about Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

My 1997 lincoln signature towncar has been blowing hot air sometimes when the A/C is on, sometimes cold air. Checked the refrigerant and the gauge said it was full, not to add any, and that the problem was somewhere else in the system. Checked the fuses and they are all O.K. So, I saw a solution that said change the Servo Motor might work. How do I do that, where is the Servo motor? Thanks, Brian Crisp

This motor is called an actuator, this is located on the heater box and is held in by two screws, the problem is that this is a 1997 and may or may not use actuators, some models depending on if you have auto temp control use actuator and some dont, there are some that use vacuum and motors, you will neeed to look at the heater box and see if it has vacuum operated doors or actuator operated doors.the heater box has doors to control the air flow and the air temp and also the circulation.i will look at a diagram and see what i find. also the most common problem would be an actuator if it uses one or if vacuum check for a vacuum leak, in the engine coming off the intake is a vacuum line that runs to the pass/side agianst the firewall then goes inside by the blower motor area, make sure that line is good and has no leaks, then check under the dash for any lines knocked off. okay, if you have the actuator you will need to locate the correct one as there will be a few of them and the easy way for you to do this is to locate one at a time and then you will watch it as you move every control on the heater control, for example first go to hot and watch it then cold then push the recirculate button and then the vent button this is for the air if you want to reuse the inside air or you want the outside air. next is the selector buttons do defrost then vent then floor, you will move them all until you find the one that doesnt work, if you move the temp control and the motor moves then thats the motor but its working now, hope this helps and heres a picture of the actuator. My 1997 lincoln signature towncar - johnjohn2_82.jpg

JohnJohn2, I forgot to mention earlier when listing my "symptoms", that when the system is running, either hot or cold, there is a "plastic thumping" kind of sound (not a click) coming from behind the center to passenger side of the dash. it's as if there is a gate that is hitting against something in there. Could this be a gate in the line that leads to the dash trying to open/close and can't? Don't know whether this helps diagnose what is going on here or not. But, it stops only when the entire electronic temperature system is turned to off.

Yes, thats the blend door trying to move and cant, a bad actuator would cause that, what your hearing is the actuator is gear operated and is trying to move the door but its gears are worn and slipping inturn you hear the banging from the door moving back, if you can pin point that noise and you will be able to locate that actuator and that will be the one to replace. one more thing, sometimes not often but the plastic knob that goes into actuator to move the door somtimes breaks but again not often so when you remove the motor just look at the knob if theres room to look in there, with the air off you can use something to move the door, see if the door operates if you do it by hand. good luck.

This is so helpful. Now, if I only knew how to get to it and how many are there? I'm hearing it correctly, it's coming from the middle vent on the passenger side. There are 4 vents across the top, so listening at it, is that how I determine which one?
Not skilled at mechnical stuff, but have a son who is if I knew what to do to get to these things.
    Any suggestions on that part?

2003 Lincoln LS hot air while stopped cold while driving

Based on what you have said and my 30 years a Ford dealer tech I believe you have a slightly low AC system refrigerant charge due to a small leak at the AC compressor or the AC line connections. I would have a shop hook up a set of gauges to monitor the pressures at idle and see just how low it is. DO NOT ADD UNTIL YOU KNOW HOW MUCH IS NEEDED, YOU CAN LOCK UP THE COMPRESSOR.

AC blows hot air 1997 Lincoln Town Car. On board system reads code 30.

I do not have a code book ! Try this : Check black canister for cold feel (passenger side under hood)l. If cold, check all vacuum lines...vacuum motors move doors to divert fresh air thru hot or cold coils in plenum chamber (under dash).
A manual shouild help !

My 01 lincoln towncar- i turn on the a/c it says it is turned on but it does not blow any air what could it be ?

If it does not blow any cold air the system may need to be recharged. But if it does not blow any air at all you may have a bad blower motor, checked the fuses first to make sure it's not that. You may also have a wiring problem. Good luck.

1998 lincoln towncar Cartier

your blend door motor has gone bad under the dash . the blend door motor controls the blend door in the heater box to allow hot or cold air to flow or a mixture of both to reach desired tempreture. this is a hard job cause the dash must be moved back to get to motor.
