Question about 1997 Ford F350 Crew Cab
If I remember correctly you should have a 4R100 or maybe the older E4OD (basically the same trans) I have an '01 Superduty and can tell you that transmission problems are VERY common. The torque converters were garbage from the factory and had a thin front plate. I shredded (literally) my stock one but was experiencing exactly what you are describing before hand. I wouldn't waste too much money trying to keep it running. A stock rebuild will cost almost as much as a built tranny. For us Ford guys BTS is the best option. They aren't cheap but you will NEVER have another problem with it.

Is trans fluid filled to correct level?
If thats not the problem I, would first try having the transmission serviced and filter replaced.
