If you ran the engine for 20 minutes with no oil, it has likely been damaged significantly and has locked up. Surely you would have had a low oil pressure light. First step will be to see if the engine even turns or not.
Clicking noise usually means a bad connection at the battery terminal. It can also be a bad connection at the starter or solenoid. Re-clean and tighten battery cables, and if that doesn't do it,re-tighten starter connections.Don't overtighten as copper-bronze studs can break easily. If your Ranger is standard shift (4 or 5-speed), don't get under the car or in front of it without the battery cables disconnectede or the shifter in neutral,as any current you inadvertently send thru the starter can engage it and run you over or knock the vehicle off jackstands or blocks. don-ohio
The clicking noise is due to low battery charge, or a bad battery. Check to make sure the cables are firmly attached, and free of corrosion, as that could cause your problem If you can jump start it, bring it to a parts store, where most offer a free check of your charging system. Either your battery is bad, or the alternator is not charging it. You could have a drain somewhere, which is killing the battery, but check the charging system 1st. If you can't drive the vehicle to the parts store, pull out the battery and bring it to them, they can test it. Let me know if you have any further questions.
If the starter is just clicking, then it is not,but if the starter is kicking the starter drive out,and that is the noise you are hearing then it might be,turn the crank pulley with a socket and ratchet ,clock wise,if it turns then this is not the problem, make sure the ground to the engine is good,if the ground cable has gone bad, this will happen.
Could be corrosion on the cables, I would clean both cables and try again. if no corrosion I would then look at the battery for correct voltage and fluid. batttery could be bad.
bad alternator possible or bad battery..even though its new that battery can be bad. I would take a volt meter and with the engine running check the volts of the battery..If the volts are 12 you need to replace alternator, if volts are 14 you need to check the battery. to check the battery hold the volt meter to the battery and have someone start the car..while the starter is cranking battery volts should not drop below 10volts.if they do your battery is bad.
