Question about 2004 Kia Rio

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Kia Rio and most of the time it works just fine, but every now and then the car won't start at all. I turn the key and all the electrical components come on just fine (lights, radio, etc) but its like the starter won't engage at all. There will be a click and hum for maybe 3-5 seconds but then it stops. Some times if I wait 10 minute ad try again it will work, but some times it will be 5-6 hours before I can get the car to start. I have had the starter replaced but the problem still happens, I am not sure where else to look at to fix this issue. Any help would be nice.

Does sound like the starter still. This is what I call a lottery start it is pot luck if the car starts each morning. The motor occasionally refuses to start to turn first time and has a defined rhythmic pulse when turning over - this is due to either burnt out armature coil or the contact face of the armature has become badly pitted or has worn off centre causing the brushes to lose contact.

? - replace brushes and ensure brush passages allow free movement

? - replace/ exchange the starter motor as armature contact area and windings are beyond repair.

If is just worn brushes another check is hit the outside of the starter motor whilst at the same time trying to start the car. If as you hit it the starter jumps into life and does its job then this is sign of worn brushes. There is no harm in taking the motor and starter solenoid out for a strip down and full inspection and possible clean up. To eliminate from the possibilities is a step forward.

Check connections at starter as well for any grounds you may have disconnected during engine replacement. If vehicle started prior to engine replacement, suspect something loose or disconnected

Kia rio steering wheel is locked and won't turn

Okay, I just had this same problem with my 2009 Kia Rio and I did this. So not to down everyone's post on here -- everyone is correct -- by turning the steering wheel back and forth and turning the ignition key at the same time is a correct method. However, after talking to a Kia Serviceman, he told me you have to do it hard -- meaning turning it violently back and forth hard (madman style). In order to do this operation, I had my wife sit in the driver side and turn the key while I was on her left side grabbing the steering wheel and violent moving it back and forth like a madman, and after about 2mins of doing it the key turned over -- problem fixed. Do not worry about breaking anything; turning the steering wheel violently hard is a must -- this was told to me by a Kia service Rep. Remember -- have someone assist you; either turning the key or violently turning the steering wheel back and forth. Hope this works for you!!!!!

The immobiliser in my 2004 Kia Rio doesn't disengage when I try and turn on the ignition. I have try combinations of locking with central locking unlocking with key until the ignition will turn over. Very...

2004 kia rio's sold in the us do not have a factory installed immobiliser. you may have another issue, if it is an automatic transmission I would check the neutral safety switch, the next time is does not start, put the car in neutral and see if it starts, if it does you may have a bad switch.
