2000 gmc jimmy steering is getting stiffer. The power steering pump does't make any unusual sounds and the oil looks good. Recently had 4 new ball joints, idler arm and pitman arm installed. The vehicle has 140,000 miles. Any ideas??

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

The new under chassis parts installed can cause the steering to be a little stiffer. It is normal and it tends to go soft when the ball joints gets pressed.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Could be steering shaft on bottom of column that connects column to gearbox. Rag joint or u-joints on shaft are dry or seized. Try spraying rubber rag joint & u-joints on steering shaft with a good penetrating oil like PB Blaster. Work steering wheel all the way to left, spray, then turn all the way to right & spray some more.

104,000 miles GMC Jimmy 4x4 with power everything looking to buy for second car, any major things i should look out for , is it a good car to have

They're decent vehicles. If all has been taken care of, the transmission should last until around 200,000 mi, and that's usually the first major thing to go. Sometimes the fuel pump needs replaced around this time, so expect that one to come up if it hasn't already been replaced. On occasion as well, ball joints are getting close to replacing, but that's a pretty easy job. Otherwise, you should be able to settle in for a while and enjoy your vehicle. Also, fuel economy isn't the greatest....don't expect to get more than 21 mpg on the highway. (the 4.3 V-6 isn't known for it's economy.) The parts are cheap, and the trucks last. Hope this helps.

Steering is stiff driving on the road... feels as if it sticking

1.It isn't a lower or upper ball-joint, lower ball-joint, nor tie-rod end. A lower ball-joint being bad, would make the front-end shake. Upper ball-joint, and tie rod ends being bad, would make steering erratic.

Sounds more like the problem is in the steering box. In all actuality, it almost sounds like the power steering pump wasn't changed. Are you sure it's a new, known, good pump?

Power steering fluid leaked out of 2000 GMC Jimmy

well it went somewhere, check all the lines and look for signs of recent fluid leaks, it will be very apparent if u lost that much fluid, most likely it will either be the power sterering hoses or the front shaft seal of the pump.

I recently had a similar problem but mine would not come out of the ignition. I took it to the shop and they had to replace the steering column. This is was a costly part to put in.
