Question about 2006 Jaguar S-Type

Open Question

2006 S type 2.7D has developed an intermittent rough idle which coincides with smoke from between the engine and bulkhead which gets drawn in to the air. Bought the car from Stratstone Manchester 8 months ago and it overheated on the way home. After several attempts to fix it they replaced the fan unit. Problems then started with the heater & air con it took several visits before it was sorted and that's when the intermittent engine started running rough. The DPF also played up with a message that it was full but the service manager said it wasn't. It has now been back for the rough idle 4 or 5 times with each visit being 2-3 weeks long. They have replaced a injector,a cat, some sensor and reprogrammed the management system that operates the PDF cleaning operation but it still has the problem. It's back at Stratstone for the last attemp. The manager refused to refund and could not guarantee they could fix it.

SOURCE: engine running rough change pluds air mass sensor

If you can still drive it, go to Autozone or O'reillys and ask them to please scan your engine. You can spend a fortune guessing and replacing good parts. Good Luck

SOURCE: engine management light

When you bring it to the garage, they should provide you with the code, or codes that would tell you what the issue is. The code probably referred to something with the O2 sensor system, so that's why they changed the sensor, but a lot of other issues with the system can generate the same code. I don't believe the fully checked your car, but just rather wanted to do it quick

SOURCE: Jaguar x type 2004 2.5 petrol V6, 38500 miles, codes P0171, P0174

Have exactly the same issue on 04 jag x type 2.5. So far have replaced fuel filter, air filter k&n, plugs ngk. Codes cleared, same issue. Seems to appear when air temp is cold and eng is warm.
Am replacing upstream O2 sensors and cleaning MAF next. Will keep you posted if it clears up. Did you ever find the cause?

SOURCE: car lost power and started putting out black

The rubber pipe feeding air from the intercooler to the bottom of the EGR valve is probably split - this was the problem on mine - exact same symptoms!

High consumption of engine oil and smoking.

If the engine smokes all the time it's running then excessive wear of the piston rings is causing it. If the smoke is heavy when you accelerate then clears up then valve stem seals are worn allowing oil to be drawn past the valve stems into the cylinders when idling such as at a stop sign. Once you get going the engine burns the oil making the smoke.

I have a 2001 BMW 325 which has developed a rough idle with the service engine light soon indicator on. Also when the hood is opened you can hear an intermittent what sounds like a metal on metal knock...

Think this engine has had its day, could be a hydraulic valve adjuster ,well the noise anyway but as for the rough idle i have no idea without my head inside the engine compartment
Could even be a piston who knows as these type of cars do get well thrashed about by budding F1 drivers ,if you can video it and post the video then i might have a better idea failing which ask a local mechanic to have a look for you

Jaguar x type 2.0 turbo diesel 2006. Car was smoking really badly in all gears black like sut, really rough idling. And sounds like it has breathing problems almost like it's not running on all cylinders....

I have exactly the same problem on my x type 2.0 turbo diesel 2006. Problem occurred all of a sudden while driving, was told to change turbo and EGR valve, but same problem. Took to dealers and they advised because it has so many error faults coming from the engine it would be cheaper to change the engine. Will be trying this unless I can get some other advise.

Car idles and runs rough intermittently after engne is warm.

it could be plugs and or high tention leads, causing missfire best way to check these is better at night open the hood of the car, run engine and see if you are getting a loose spark, that will be your high tention leads it could also be that when they get hot, they expand and start reducing the power of the spark to the plugs if you find that these will need replacing, to test spark plugs, get a pair of pliers and preff a pair of rubber gloves, pull the leads off each plug one at a time, if there is no change on one you pull of, that plug needs replacing, continue till you have checked all of them, hope this helps
