Peugeot 205 brakes not working

My wifes car appears to have no brakes. It was fine yesterday. I have driven it today. I can put my foot to the floor when I press the brake pedal.

Then I can sort of pump the brake and get some sort of brake working but not very well.

Any ideas?

If you can put your foot to the floor it means there is no pressure in the breaking system, if there are no leaks then check that there is fluid in the pot, if so then take it to a garage and get it checked out.

It means one of your brake pipes are split, it happened to me on my 205 and i ended up in a hedge backwards, i suggest you park it on concrete overnight to see what sort of area the leak is.

Air is getting into the system hence the spongy feel to the pedal. The problem may lie with the brake assist system - have it checked professionally - brakes matter!

The problem started yesterday it was difficult to turn the key when i put it in th ignition. today i was unable to turn it at all I tried adjusting the steering wheel but still not working.

Your igniton internal parts is wearing, worn out. Try jiggling the key as you turn it. Also try putting your foot on the brake, put the car in neutral, and then try to turn the key. If not your going to need a new key lock/ignition.

Check the catalitic converter, it might be plugged. You might want to replace fuel filter if it hasn't been changed for a while.

Pedal almost goes to floor, see steam or smoke from front wheels

Definitely sounds like you have a brake fluid leak. It shouldn't be driven anymore until the problem is repaired. The red brake light comes on when the fluid is low. If your in a rusty climate one of the brake lines has probably rusted out. When it dries up try following the lines from the master to each wheel. However since you said you saw smoke when braking i'd bet the leak is near a wheel and fluid hit the rotor or caliper which caused the smoke. In either case, sounds like something has to be replaced / repaired. Good luck.

Put your foot on the brake before you attempt to put it in gear. if that does not work the sensor that stops you from putting it in gear without using the brake has failed... check fuses first.

Ok man, i don't if that helps you, but when i tried it in my 1989 peugeot 205.
Try this: put on the hazzard lights and that will test some of the brake light circuit.

My 03 trailblazer does the same thing and the service dept. told me that it was normal for this model to do that, it has never failed to stop but if your sitting at a red light you can feel the peddle go down to almost the floor but it stops fine and it has done this since day 1 and they say thats normal on the trailblazer.
