Question about 2004 Chrysler Sebring

1 Answer

Car will go into drive and reverse and shifts fine while driving. Will not go into park without brute force and will still roll backwards. Key cannot be removed. Transmission shop says it is neutral safety switch??????? This is a 2007 Ford Mustang V6 automatic shifter on the floor.

Ford/Lincoln vehicles are equipt with an interlock solenoid on the steering column underneath. If this solenoid has failed it can cause this problem. The Brake switch can also cause and this adverse affect since the interlock solenoid is activated by the brake switch. Check to see if brake light illuminates when pressing the brake pedal, if it does then no problem there and it would be the interlock solenoid.

The failure of the interlock solenoid is quite common, and a replacement part is easily obtained from a local Ford dealer. If you are not a do it your-selfer you may want to call a tow truck and have it repaired at a service center.

. I would check the shifter cable. If it broke in reverse while you're son was putting it in drive that would cause it to remain in reverse . Being stuck in reverse would also cause it not to start because it's in gear.

2001 GMC ENVOY- I quickly put the car in park and removed the key in one motion..when I went to get out the car rolled backwards. I realized that as I turned the car off it was in reverse. I now can't...

The key lock doesn't lock it in whatever gear it happens to be in - it only locks it in Park. If it's in Reverse now, you should be able to shift it to any other gear, including Park. THEN it'll lock. If you shift it to Neutral now, it'll start there.

Also... you shouldn't actually have to have the car running to shift it - you should only have to have the key in any position except the Lock position. You may still be required to step on the brake pedal, though.

Car is in park on incline, and will not start.

There is a neutral safety switch to make sure car is neutral. If that switch went bad or becase your parked on incline the switch is not made up because car rolled back when you put it in park.If you can depending on the situation, put key in ignition, turn key till one click before it starts, apply emergency brake, depress regular brakes and shift car from park to drive then back to park.then turn off key and restart. If for some reason you try to shift out of park and it wont move you need to roll car a little forward or backward(have someone else do the pushing and be carefull not to put anyone in a pinch point between another car if this car is parked between two cars)With older cars this is usally the case.If this fixes your problem i would have a mechanic change switch because this will probrobly happen again.Be carefull.......

This is a tranmission linkage problem. The car may be in park but the linkage arm well sometimes slip of or sometimes just run crooked as you switch through the gears. My car has also done the same thing until I recapped the arm with a new lock washer
