Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic;165,000 miles. Check engine light comes on sporadically. Been told catalytic converter is trashed. Sometimes starts great; sometimes hard start. "Belches/burps/chugs" -- when idling (red light, stop sign, drive-up at bank) feels like it wants to 'go' and makes that sound like if I took my foot off the brake it would **** forward. Also rear end continues to make strange noises after engine is shut down.

Did you know Jeep did a recall and paid for replacement of catalytic converters on 1996 models (don't know about any others) - they reimbursed me for work done, up to a point - hope this helps!

before you go changing out the catalytic converter realize that the engine light comes on with only a few percent of the catalytic converter plugged - so before you change it, clan out the engine combustion chamber. i did this on my ford Taurus and with a $5 can of carb cleaner, it solved the problem

Won't accelerate past 40 miles per hour

these jeeps did have a small problem with the tp sensor. i would also have the back pressure of the exhaust checked to see if you have a catalytic converter choked up.

Check Engine light- catalytic converter

It might be helpfull to know the codes of the "check engine"lite but it seems the PCM is the issue,be sure the O2 sensors were the correct ones and which dealer made the recall? an used-car one or a Chrysler one?if no solution, you should go to a chrysler/jeep dealer and talk to solve this because it is a recall involved and they should repair your SUV at no cost no matter the miles on the odo!.buena suerte!

Catalitic converter

I hate to say this, but what they told you seems to be correct. The catalytic converter is somewhat expensive for this vehicle because an O.E. converter must be used. If you were to install an aftermarket converter on this vehice, it would still not pass the emission's test. Furthermore replacing the oxygen sensor along with it is the only way to go. Hope this helps.
