If your shifter knob has not been damaged and is still connected properly, the cause is most likely the "brake shift interlock"...besides the dealer, your best and least costly repair might be your local locksmith...the ignition key cylinder and the brake pedal interlock can be inspected by the locksmith. This is usually a free inspection, and if repair or replacement is needed, the locksmith is experienced at this and might save extra money...If the knob is damaged or loose...the replacement of the knob and u shaped hold on clip (located on the back of the knob) is the problem...Dealers want $35 for a new knob...your local salvage yard gets a couple of bucks...Hope this helps.

SOURCE: key gets stuck in ignition

My daughter drives a Suzuki, my solution to her is: while the gear shift lever is in park, lightly put pressure on the gear shift lever, through the park position and while pressing the gear shift towards park light rock left to right while trying to remove the key.

The interlock between the transmission and the ignition switch needs to be adjusted/ repaired or replaced.

SOURCE: Transmission wont shift out of park

Try checking the brake light sending unit. Are your brake lights even working. Many newer vehincles will not shift out of park unless the brake pedal is depressed. However, a faulty sendind unit located on the pedal itself can keep you from moving anywhere. Just check to see if your brake lights are working to know if the sending unit is working.

SOURCE: gear shift won't move out of park sometimes

look for transmission shift interlock solenoid fuse.or a bad brake switch will cause transmission not to come out of park.

Make sure the brake lights are coming on if not the release solenoid that unlocks park gets no power and will not release the shifter from park position. Also check the owner's manual for a possible way to override the solenoid lock.

I can't shift from parking to gear

You have to fully apply your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition key is in the RUN position. If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever -- push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P) and also release the shift lever button on floor shift console models -- as you maintain brake application. Then move the shift lever into the gear you wish.

I get a clicking from the gesr shift area when I apply or release the foot brake

This is normal when gear shift is in park. When footbrake is depressed a mechanism in the J gate releases the gear shift so that it can be shifted out of the park position. The clicking noise is is the sound of the mechanism.

My gear shift is stuck and will not move from park to reverse. I had backed out the car and turned it off. when I went to move the car, my gear shift will not move out of the park position.

do the brake lights work? the system has a lock out that keeps you from moving out of park unless the brake circuit is activated, hence no brake lights no park lock out release, if the brk lights do work u most have a stuck or defective park lock out solenoid.
