No, it wont cause the engine to go bad. If the timing chain or belt breaks, that can do major damage to the head. It usually cost around six hundred dollars to have it replaced. If you do it yourself just the cost of parts. Here are the INSTRUCTIONS for replacing it to give you an idea of what's involved.

How do I repair a timing chain?

the timing chain would need replaced, but as far as the water pump and belt, it would depend on their condition. If the pump isn't leaking and belt isn't cracking, you would just need to replace the mounting gasket. It would be your choice depending on cost.

2000 4.0 sohc explorer cold start erratic, almost stalls levels off at 900 rpms, no codes, replaced iac.- iat, tps, ect, ckp, cmp sensores within spec. timing chains rattle at start up HEELP!!!!

timing chains rattle at start up HEELP!!!! <<<<< This Will NOT Set A Code And WILL Cause EP Engine Performance Problems, If the Timing Chain DEVIATES More than 8 Degrees it is NO GOOD for OPTIMUM Engine performance.
The Fact that you have NO CODES Lieves DIAGNOSING it Fairly Simple. Morning Starts (COLD START) is a CLOSED LOOP Condition and by the time it warms up it closes LOOP and the ECM takes over the Timing, and compisates for the LOOSNESS of the Timing Chain by ADVANCING / RETARDING the Timing. thus Good Running when Warmed up. Hope & I Wish you Good Luck with it.

2002 ford explorer 4.0 sohc racheting engine noise l/f changes with rpm. i understand this could be timing chain guide. im fixing car for friend who had stroke and family need car for his transportation....

If it sounds bad. I wouldn't recommend driving it. If you have a bad guide. It would be best to replace all timing components. You don't want to get stranded on the road.
