Go to any Autozone, Advance. or Oreillys for a free scan. Sounds like an idle control solenoid may be bad. Or the water temperature sensor is not putting your car into the "cold start sequence".

Transmission install 89 ford ranger

You should be able to rent a spline alignment tool from the parts house where you got transmission. I'm assuming you have a manual transmission so the clutch pad doesn't want to cooperate? I think even with an automatic it's much the same.

Location of fuel pump relay on 89 ford ranger 2.9 v6

It's powered by fuse #1 in the battery fuse box, so I would think it should be right there somewhere. If it isn't labeled, see if you can turn the box over to see where fuse #1 leads to.

it could be a valve. or it could be a worn camshaft and lifters.

89 ranger wont start

Neutral safety switch is my best guess (about 98% sure on this one) It is located somewhere on the transmission (sorry about the vagueness). It prevents you from starting your vehicle in gear. If left unplugged the truck will not start at all. All I can include is a picture of the top (connection) on the switch if it is of any help.
