Brake light switch is mounted just above brake pedal under dash. It's small plastic switch w/a couple of wires coming from it.

Shift solenoid

If you are attempting this when moving it helps to break the load on the gears by depressing the clutch momentarily or if auto then lifting the foot of the accelerator for a second .

Hi there,

Some automatic vehicles rely on the brake switch (mounted on brake pedal) to be activated by depressing brake pedal. This signal then operates a relay and switch, to release the gear lever.

Firstly, I would check the brake pedal switch (are your brake lights working?).

If brake switch is confirmed OK, then inspect the relay (and related circuit components) of the gear release switch.

My 1998 Tauris won'y shift into gear, the button on the shift can not be depressed and therefore the shift won,t move.

Make sure your brake lights work, if they do then the problem is the solenoid which controls the locking of the shifter mechanism and is located under a panel somewhere around the base of the shifter shaft...... if your brake lights don't work, you probably need to replace their fuse which shoulod fix the problem.

I have a 1999 Ford Escort and this morning could not get the silly thing to shift out of park. The release button on the shifter will not push in to move the shifter into drive or any other gear

These cars have a shift interlock switch that prevents the car from being shifted out of park if you don't depress the brake. If your brake lights work, then the switch it good. It isn't uncommon that the interlock solenoid fails. The solenoid moves the lock release when you depress the brake. If you look on the side of the console you can see a notch cut out. You can put a screwdriver in there to push the interlock and shift it from park. Of course, you don't want to do this all the time so you either need to replace the interlock solenoid (last I checked they were about $150) or just defeat the solenoid with a zip tie. The only problem with the zip tie is that you don't have to depress the brake to shift it from park and it can be shifted from park even if the key is not in it. Your owners manual will have better detail and pictures of the interlock and where to put the screwdriver to manually shift it from park.

Have 99 ford ranger 4.0 v6 4x4 automatic. the shifter will not budge when I try to shift gears. what could be the problem?

under the dash if you look, press the brake with your hand, you will see a button that the brake petal pushes against, that unlocks the shifter, either that switch needs replaced, or you linkage is froze up.

Car must be on and brake pedal depressed to shift. If you have no brake lights then the car doesn't know the pedal is depressed and will not shift out of park. This car has an interlock overide on the shifter console, push it and it will come out of Park. You will need a brake light switch tho.

My 20002 mustang v6 its automatic

To shift from "P" to "R", there is a swicth that allows the shift button on the shift lever to be depressed. For this switch to work, the ingnition switch must be "ON" and the brake pedal depressed. If all yor brake lights went out (or if your brake switch on the pedal fails to work), then the shift switch wont work and you can not shift out of "P".

It might just be a fuse. Check to see if your brake lights light up when you step on the brake with the key on. If not it is probably just a fuse.
