  1. Check your oil dipstick to make sure you have the proper amount of oil, and if it has been a while, get an oil change and New oil filter installed.
  2. If you have high mileage on your engine, your main and rod bearings and crankshaft journals may be worn to the point where your oil pressure suffers. As the bearings wear, clearances increase allowing increased flow which reduces pressure. It doesn't take much of an increase in bearing clearances to cause a noticeable drop in oil pressure.
  3. The fix for low oil pressure due to excessive bearing clearances is to replace the bearings or overhaul the engine. Installing a new oil pump or a higher pressure pump won't help because the bearings have too great a leakage rate to hold the required pressure.
  4. Also, restrictions in the pickup tube screen can choke off the flow of oil into the pump, reducing flow and pressure. You will need to drop the Oil Pan to check and clean the pickup tube screen.
  5. Lastly, if the oil level is okay, check the oil pressure sending unit. Disconnect the unit and check the warning lamp or gauge reading. If the warning light remains on with the sending unit disconnected, there may be a short to ground in the warning lamp circuit. If there is no change in the gauge reading the problem is in the instrumentation. Bad oil pressure sending units are quite common.

Set your timing when u remove the oil pump it will surley affect the timing on your motor.... do this with a timing light and and adjust timing by rotating the distrubutor.

no way to test oil flow as the system is sealed
however you can check oil pressure and that will indicate the oil flow from the pump
as pressure is a product of flow against restriction, low oil pressure indicates high flow rates with no restrictions or low flow rates with no restrictions
use a mechanical gauge , get the oil pressure specs and check the pressures at idle and then again at around the 2500 rpms mark
if the pressure falls within the specs then the oil flow will be correct

Low pressure when at idle, after the engine has warmed up and the oil has thinned, indicates that the oil pump is worn and needs to be replaced.

When the engine gets warm the oil light flashes on and off. The oil level is ok What could this be ?

Low oil pressure at low rpms


Depending on tone and depth of "clicking" it could be anything from lifters to connecting rods or piston pins....

cheapest to expensive:

Replace oil filter

if that doesn't do it (which it doesn't sound like it),

Replace engine...

Because clicking/ticking/clunking noises while having a "low oil pressure" issue (most of the time) means the engine is destroying itself.

Engine knock hard over 2500 rpm


Does the oil light come on or the knock occur during the engine warm up after a cold start?
There could be a couple of problems causing the issue. You could have an oil pressure pump or pump pressure regulator sticking. I would have a mechanical oil pressure gauge installed and verify oil pressure at idle and 2500 rpms to make sure oil pressure is in normal ranges.
You could also have excessive piston rod bearing, crankshaft bearing or cam shaft bearing wear that will cause oil pressure to drop too low to prevent the rod knock your hearing at 2500 rpm.
You said a knock and not a ticking noise,so I don't believe a lifter is the issue at 2500 rpm.
Start with the oil pressure check and go from there.

your oil sensor comes on at less than ten psi, you may have internal engine damage how many miles on engine, any gum up inside engine, you can try to put on a high pressure high volume melling oil pump to try to help for the time being, but you may need to have it torn and repaired.

Lost oil pressure


i wouldnt worry about it untill it gets lower than 10 lbs,the oil does get thinner as it warms up,if it does get that low warm or cold,then the mains are getting bad.
