On my 01 montero I need to change the AT trans filter is that a big deal? I have a 3.5

Not too hard on most AT's. There are about 20 small bolts on the pan. The filter is inside and accessible. On some models there is a way to also drain the torque converter but you don't need to do it every time. The parts are around 30 bucks and include a new pan gasket. Very important to flatten the bolt holes around the pan with a small wooden dowel so the gasket seals up. Use some permatex red sealer on the pan and new gasket. Refill and top off after service.

    They might be right but I'd still call Jiffy Lube and ask them if they are able to service the tranny and what is involved. I don't see why the manufacturer would make the filter so inaccessible but I could be wrong.

Most vehicles do not come equipped with a transmission drain plug. You must drop the trans pan to empty the fluid. It can be messy, but not that big of a deal seeing as you have to remove the pan to change the filter anyway.

Mazda 3 sport hatch with Auto T. Sudden drop in gas mileage and dark transmission fluid. Is this related or is it a known Mazda issue? Mileage is 26000 .


It\'s not likely your spark plug check owners manual, most spark plugs today go 75k or more. Most likely it\'s your fuel injectors need cleaned.. FYI fuel injectors via solenoid for each, spray fine mist into combustion chamber, like a Windex bottle on mist. If the injectors get carbon deposits it will cause the mist to become uneven causing poor detonation of fuel,air bomb. Get a bottle of SEAFOAM fuel injector cleaner run your gas down to about a 1/4 tank poor in the cleaner and run the tank as low as you can this should help clean both the injectors and the plugs. I you have a check light on go to Auto Zone , Pep B, our any big box auto parts store and have them plug their tester in and get your code diagnostics. You may have more going on than you know. Fluid it will give you basic info every one needs to know. If you can\'t change your trans. Fluid yourself please make sure you watch U tube vids and learn the scams. Go to the closest place and get it changed. Make sure your informed! If they tell you their going to do a complete flush you get it in writing and you tell the to make sure to flush the torque converter. Check your owners manual for total amount of fluid in system and make sure they know you know how much is to be replaced or the might try and scam you, that sucks but that\'s the deal. Get it done way cheaper than a transmission, you will get a new trans. Filter too, good luck, Bret

Should i flush my transmission or just change it? 54k miles.Help!?


Trans fluid is changed at mileage intervals, and near the end, it looks like you describe.
You want to do both: flush and filter. The filter and the pan hold the real contaminants, so those get changed and cleaned...but then you're left with a giant amount of fluids in the system. Torque converter, piping, cooler, piping...the amount is not insignificant.
So, you get a clean filter and pan cleaned and reinstalled, the next thing is the flush. The t-teck machine is my fav, what it does is has a ful reservoir of clean and new fluid, and an empty container.....They run the car, allow fluid to pump out, and new fluid to go in....This keeps up until the fluid coming out of the trans system is clean.
It really is the best way, I think. The lube shops are the place to get it done, as this job is leak prone, messy and generates lots of fluid to be disposed of.

Neither of these processes should be able to cause damage. Sometimes the trans pan leaks, so get it attended to...not a big deal.

1998 Montero Sport 4x4 V6 transmission with 205,000 miles doesn't shift. Just changed the tranny filter and fluid and it still doesn't shift.


I have never seen a trans with 205,000 miles on it,
& I once owned a trans repair shop

So pull it out & have it rebuilt

Fluid is changed to replace it's ability to
remove heat, no other reason

Changing the oil and filter may cure your problem if it has been a long time since it was done, and is certainly worth a try. Make sure to dump the oil into a clean container and look for metal (tiny filings are not that big of a deal, as normal wear and tear will produce them.) look for larger pieces and check the filter for pieces, too. If you find any amount of metal, it's time for an overhaul/replace.

I have a mitsubishi montero sport utility truck and my servic engine light came on, i noticed that it was leaking when i parked it, what do you think it can be?


As far as the engine service light, I'd go to Autozone and have them read the engine codes2_bing.gif. They'll do this for free at most autozone parts places. The codes will indicate what's wrong and you can then decide if you really need to fix it. As far as the leak, it all depends what is leaking and how quickly it leaks. Leaking a little engine or trans fluid is not a big deal. Leaking any brake fluid is always a big deal.

replace the Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on the transmission, it senses when trans should be shfited to overdrive by the Transmission control module.

Well,that is a good sign there were no chunks in the pan.I would pull the codes out of the computer.You will need someone with a scan tool that will hook up to your vehicle,and access the diagnostic trouble codes.Once the code is identified,that gives a narrower area to look at.Yes on the fluid and filter,basically.The flush removes all of the old trans fluid,while changing the fluid and filter is changing about half the fluid,but that's just fine too.
