Question about 1997 Ford Probe

Overheating, it gets hot then cools down then gets hot. could this be a bad water pump or thermostat/

I would check the thermostat, and the water pump, and the coolant temperature switch., also check and make sure none of the hoses are collasping, if so, they will need to be replaced.

Connie, Were the radiator,water pump and thermostat replaced to try and fix the over heat issue or as maintenance. Engine overheating can be caused by a lot of things, Leak in cooling system, air in system, bad rad. cap, slipping belt, faulty thermostat or installed upside down, faulty water pump, plugged radiator (inside/outside), collapsing rad hose, faulty cooling fan, leaking head gasket, sludge plugging engine water passages, poorly tuned engine, etc..
Take into a good shop for diagnoses and estimate for repair. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

I have a 2000 Bmw 323 I that is having a overheating problem what would be the cause of the overheating problem a thermastat a water pump or a radiator flush


Could be any or all three or a bad cooling fan. I'd start by replacing the thermostat since they are dirt cheap. After replacing the thermostat warm the vehicle up and feel the upper radiator hose if its hot the rhe thermostat opened and the water pump is circulating coolant next check the radiator it should be hot near the upper radiator hose and significantly cooler near the lower with an even heat distribution if any parts of the radiator dont get warm/hot then you radiator is plugged. Also you need to check the operation of the cooling fan with the engine warm turn on your ac that should immediately turn the electric fan on

Thermostat or water pump?


Sounds like a thermostat is being sticky. A water pump issue should cause the vehicle to over heat quickly while driving if it is not pumping.

My 1987 corvette coup motor gets hot real fast , I check therostat and thats not the problem , any idea what else it can be ?


Could be a faulty temperature sensor, at wost it's going to be a bad head gasket or intake manifold. Sorry for the bad news and hope that it's just a faulty temp sensor.

Thank you for using fixya and check your engine oil to make sure there is no coolant mixing in with your engine oil. Coolant is corrosive to your engine's internal bearings.

yes, if the water pump is bad, input hose will be hot output hose will be cool, but that also could mean a bad thermostat.

a way to see if the water pump is pumping coolant is to remove the bleed screw on the thermostat housing and see if coolant spews out.

But it overheats. may as well change out the water pump and get rid of the original plastic impellers. While you're there, replace the thermostat with a 12 degree cooler one and drill 2 3/16" holes 180 degrees from each other in the thermostat.

2.8L motors are sensitive to overheating. you can bust a head gasket this way in no time. Also warp that long cylinder head.

You may have a couple of problems. I would first replace the thermostat, and make sure you have the proper coolant(ant-freeze) level.

My car was overheating so i took off the thermostat and replace a hose that was leaking but now car hasn't overheat yet b water comes out through reservoir tank what could be the problem now?


the water is getting to hot even though its not overheating because you need a thermostat to trap the water in the radiator to give the water a chance to cool down then the thermostat opens and the cold wanter enters the motor and the hot water in the motoer enters the rad. to cool down. with no thermostat, this doesnt happen it just circulates and warm up to the temp it warms up to and is at the same temp in motor and rad then to hot will come out the overflow, as a resualt, you will wind up losing antifreeze then wont have enough antifreeze in your engine then will damage your engine.Put a thermostat in and a water pump. fix it right or you will damage your car.
