Question about 1998 Jaguar XJ8L

1 Answer

1998 XJ8 Auto Power Steering problem. There is a noise when I turn the steering wheel and it feels like the PAS is turning on and off. This only happens when the car is cold and it's fine by the time I've backed out of my drive. Do I need to take it to a garage ASAP?

I would definately take it in and have it looked at, but it sounds like the steering pump is starting to fail. I wouldn't say you're in any danger of not being able to steer your car, but it will get progressively worse the longer you drive it. Hope this helps.

1. Check if the belt on the power-steering pump is not slipping. Replace belt if so.

2. Check for oil leaks (if yes, there is air in system).

Check your Power Steering Fluid. I would suspect its low, if so, you have a leak and the most common thing to leak is the High Pressure Hose. Have that looked at ASAP, you dont want to destroy the PS Pump.

Steering wheel clicks on 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon

steering column bearing sounds like a worn out steering column... jack the front wheels off the ground both sides relieve load on steering wheel to see if it lessens the amount of feel and noise, if it does it shoud be the column bearing, replace bearings or complete column,,, also try with the wheels off the ground and safely supported to manualy steer the wheels by hand and see if you feel in roughness or hear any noises, should some minor resistance but be smooth in it movement if everything suspension and steering component wise is in good working condition... please rate my help.. thanks...

I have a 2000 ford explorer xl, making whining noise when turning wheels. What could be the problem?

tazvtaz: If you only hear this noise when turning, I would start with the power steering assembly. 1.Check to verify if you have the proper level of power steering fluid first, if not add fluid as required. 2.Chekc for leaks around the power steering assembly, power steering hoses and replace or repair as required. 3.If the problem still exists, then your power steering motor may be on it's way out. You can verify if the noise is coming from the power steering assembly by having an assistant starting the car (in park)and turning the steering wheel, while you observe the operation of the power steering motor and determine if this is where the source of noise your are hearing is coming from. If you have found this information helpful, please vote for this reply, thank you.

if you feel it in steering wheel it could be your front axels. jack up the front end of your vehicle and turn the steering wheel to which ever way you hear it most, roll the wheel with your hand and see if you hear any noise maxwellgarland@bellsouth.net
