Question about 1999 Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Passat V6. The check engine light came on, so I ran the OBD2 diagnostic tool. It came up with the following code: P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input. I called the VW dealership and a few parts stores to find out what I need to fix it. However, I'm getting different answers. Can you assist me in identifying what part is needed? Thanks.

The antifreeze is clean and full. I was hoping to get the part info on changing the thermostat and the temp sending unit or the coolant temperture sensor. Could you provide more details?

the thermostat is located by following the top radiator hose back to the engine where it meets is where u will find the housing that holds the thermostat sometimes the sensor is also right there look for small plug and wire on most cars this can be a diy but others its a pain in the u know what. if u decide to keep car , go to parts store and buy a repair manual for that car (around 15.00) haynes or chiltons make the best it will show u how to do a lot of repairs and inspections, good luck

Emissions warning light iluminated

Hello read and understand why.
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

2002 volkswagen passat v6 4motion epc light came on when i turn car off then start again the Epc light goes off, then it cam on 20 later.

First of all you need to access the Engine Control Module (ECM) using suitable diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC's memored. DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code. Then you will bu full informed about the root cause of the problem, and you will be able to repair & replace bad pieces and reset the ECM. Then the EPC (Electronic Pedal Control) yellow light will turn OFF.

Where is the diagnostic port located on my 2001 passat 5 sp. auto V6?

On the old Volkswagen Passat B5 (MY 1997-2001) the Data Link Connector (DLC) or diagnostic port is placed on the right side of the parking brake lever, under a small rectangle rubber cover. See pictures below:

On the new Volkswagen Passat B5 (after MY 2001) the Data Link Connector (DLC) or diagnostic port is placed on the panel above pedals. See pictures below:

I have a 2002 3-litre v6 a4 cab engine management

engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor

A code P0118 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • A bad connection at the sensor
  • An open in the ground circuit between the ECT sensor and the PCM
  • A short in the voltage feed between the sensor and the PCM
  • A bad PCM (less likely)
  • A bad temperature sensor (shorted internally)

I need to know the location of the code scanner hookup in a 2003 VW Passat

All of the scanner ports on cars are required to be within a certain distance of the steering wheel. Typically they are not far under the steering wheel. Look for a cover if it is not clearly visible from under the dash.
OBD2 scanners will scan the engine components only...which is useful. If you want to read all your VW systems, you will need a VAG scan tool. You can find them for $50.
Good Luck!
