Question about 2005 Ford Escape

3 Answers

I've been told that I need a brake booster replacement on my 2005 FOrd Escape Limited (115,000 miles). It gives a hissing noise while driving, squeels like a baby when I let up on the brake, and occassionally won't let me push in the brake pedal unless I pump once. What do you think? What should the "damage" ($$$) be???

The part is going to range from around $100 to $130, and labor is about 1 to 1.5 hours-so figure somewhere around $175 to $235. Before you decide to do this though, check for a bad hose or plug grommet from the hose to the booster for the leak-see if you can tell where it is coming from, it might be very simple to fix and since your vehicle is not that old, i would be surprised that the booster is bad, they usually last almost forever.

The check valve on booster may be the only issue
    $10.00 at most

The Booster is $54.99 or $133.00 at NAPA
depending on whether you have drums or discs
    on back

YOU SURELY WOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER
    $800.00 at a DEALER

It can't go more than $350 down the street
You can do yourself in an hour, easy

Hissing sound coming through boot on brake pedal of 2005 ford escape. Is the brake booster leaking

A hissing sound when depressing the brake pedal is an indication that the booster is leaking. Another indication is that the pedal will be more difficult to push down before starting the car after it has been sitting for a while. A faulty brake booster will only make it more difficult to apply the brakes. However, it should be noted that a leak in the booster may be caused by brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder into the booster and this could become a dangerous problem.

Hello rickyjkoch: My name is Roger and I will help with your question. With the engine off, press the brake pedal down several times. Hold the pedal down and start the engine. The brake pedal should drop 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches toward the floor. If the pedal stays up and does not drop the booster has a problem. However if you hear a hissing sound from the dash area of the brake pedal the booster should be replaced. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

It sounds like the rubber diaphragm in the brake booster has developed a leak producing the hissing / sucking noise. The only option is to replace the booster as a complete assembly as they need specialist tools to repair. If the booster fails completely you will still have brakes but the pedal will be very hard and it will take a lot of muscle power to stop vehicle. Best to have booster replced soon before you experience situation described above.

a whistling noise will be a vacuum leak from some point. The Escapes are known for having vacuum issues in the rear of the engine due heat caused from the motor. The lines dry and crack out.

The power brake booster has a bad valve. I can't suggest where to find a new valve for it, but you can buy a rebuilt replacement. They are usually not hard to put on.
