2004 PT Cruiser - Check Engine light and Clunking sound

My PT has around 70k and in the front while driving I hear a clunking noise, not really a grinding or other such sound. Also it isn't rhythmic or having any regularity. And the Check engine light came on. It's a manual transmission but the sound doesn't happen at around freeway speeds, and it also doesn't seem to be linked to the clutch. any idea?

I had the same problem , front end clunk. I replaced the ball joint , they are pressed in and can be replaced but its not an easy task. Or you can buy the whole lower arm with the ball joint already in. the lower control arm is also not an easy task to replace. The ball joint cost around 40 dollars the whole control arm is appprox. 150.00 A friend and I did the replacing so labour was minimal , a few beers for my friend

Clunking noise w/ acceleration

Ya know it sounds like one of the U-Jonts in the front drive line to the front wheels has failed or even one of the driveline U- joints is either Dry and lost its bearings and is worn out,
One of the easiest ways to make sure its not the engine is while driving down a hill put the car in neutral, turn off the engine coast down a small hill and turn to either direction and see if you still hear it , if you still hear it its gonna be somewhere in the drive lines, becareful you will not have power steering or power brakes with the engine off, but you can restart the engine inn neutral at any time . Please let me know.
