The light is on because the ECM has determined that there is a fault in the system-you can disconnect the battery for aobut 5+ minutes and it will clear the code the ECM set, but if it comes back, you need to get the ECM hooked up to a scanner and get the code so that the problem can be diagnosed and fixed-this can be done for free at most retail auto supply stores. Make sure you have the actual code(s) (i.e.'P0134) and post back here for assistance.

this is EXACTLY the right thing to do to clear a check engine light, and it goes so far as to say that if it comes back you DO have an issue and the issue needs to be corrected to remove the CEL-so thanks a lot for the 2 thumbs...

What service light ? service engine soon ? This light has nothing to do with oil , has to do with emissions > If the light is on there are codes stored in the engine computer . The codes need to be checked and then diagnosis can start . Yes it could be a real big problem ! Trouble Codes

How to reset service engine soon light

The engine light is on whenever there is an issue with the vehicle. To reset the light you would have to fix the problem and then clear the code with a scanner otherwise the light will come back Just resetting doesn't fix it.

How can I reset the service engine soon light on a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Hi,
The service light is indicating there is a fault code either in the ECM or BCM system. The only way in which this can be switched off is to have these codes checked and cleared in these to control unit with a diagnostic tool.

My service engine soon light is on but my car runs fine and makes no noises or anything...what could be wrong?

Almost all vehicles check engine lights will come on a nd stay on a t a factory pre-determined interval, like 80,000 miles. Anyone with a OBD III scanner can check for trouble codes and clear them, resetting the computer faults and turning out the light. The codes themselves should pinpoint any real prolems. As there seem to be no problems, my best guess would be if there is a problem, it is most likely a sensor, like oxygen.

How to Reset the Change Oil Light

After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset.

With the ignition key to ON, push the RESET button

located in the driver's side instrument panel fuse block. The

CHANGE OIL light will start to flash, press and hold the

RESET button again. The reset is complete when you hear
the chimes sound and the CHANGE OIL light goes out.

Just had brake work and an oil change on my 2000 bonneville, and now the service engine soon light is on. could it just need to be reset?

Most Likely, yes. If there was a real problem, the "Check Engine" light would be on. This one is just a service interval reminder light.

Cougar service engine light comes on for the first two miles

Hold down the "trip" and "trip reset" buttons at the same time when the service engine light comes on. The service engine light comes on between 5000 and 8000 miles as an oil change reminder, however you have to reset it manually.

Service engine soon light comes on and goes off

The service engine soon light comes on for many reasons..it could be as simple as CO2 sensor, or it may just be one of the lights that just stays on, ask your local GM garagre to reset the code for you..maybe cost you a couple bucks.
