I am just bookmarking your issue for now. I don't have access to 2004 shop manual until I get to work.

i think you can take off trim cover with door closed but not sure. Some are blocked by qtr trim panels. If a 2004, it must be a Freestar since we did not make a 2004 Windstar.

You'd have to take of the panel/interior and open it from the inside.

There is a small plastic access cover right above the mechanism on the inside of the hatch. It is about 1.5" by 1.5" square. Pop it off and drown the lock with WD40 to see if you can free it iu.

In similar cases, I open and then removed the inner panel to partially reveal the mechanism. It looked like it was brought up from the Titanic. It was completely rusted.

Seems that this model has a problem with water getting into the lock as it pools in the area where the catch is. sometimes the problem is fixed as long as you continue to spray the hatch out of it with WD40
.

Keep us updated.

How do I open the rear door if the latch handle/lever does not work?

Try to get it open by pulling the hatch lanel off from inside the vehicle and pulling on latch rod. Usually hatches dont open with handle due to diconnected rods or broken release cables. Also, you can use your key fob to open hatch( if equipped)

HOW DO I OPEN DOOR?HANDLE FOR REAR HATCH OF 2002 CHEV TRACKER HARDTOP IS BROKEN, HOW DO I GET INSIDE TO FIX WHEN I CAN'T OPEN DOOR?

I have had the same issue with mine. Using the key unlock the door from the outside while at the same time lifting the handle underneath. You may have to bang on the cover of the lock to get it to unlatch as well. Once opened you will find the back cover comes off fairly easily however getting to the lock set can be a challenge. Look at the rod assembly and make sure it is not bent. Mine was bent and out of alignment. I had to get another because it was too weak.

The Rear hatch door handle does not unlock

had this problem myself.... you gotta go in through the back and take the plastic/vinal cover off the rear door and look for the lock from the inside..... unlock it .... open the door and then you can repair and lube the mechanism while standing outside like a human being. its not very hard to do.. just take your time and don't force anything.

My rear hatch is stuck like its locked but its not how can i get it open to work on it

You will need to pull away the top of the inside cover (area under the bottom of rear window) from inside the cargo area. Pull as many screws as you can easily, and pull out on the area of the interior cover and slide your arm inside to grab the lock rod. Once the rod is grabbed, slide it to the left and right while someone operates the outside door handle. The hatch should unlock and open to allow total removal of the interior panel and allow access for repair and inspection.

Rear hatch will not unlock

When the latch mechanism screws come loose the door will not open with the key or electric door lock. From inside the bagage compartment you will have to remove the rear plastic panels (which you can't do because some of the screws are now inaccessable!) The trick is to remove as many screws as you can. A couple of screws are hidden under the carpet trim of the rear door panel-towards the corners, feel around for the holes. Now pry away the top of the plastic panel just below the rear window in the center- the plastic will bow out enough to get an arm in. The plastic can be sharp so wear a thin long sleeve shirt. reach down and feel 5 inches to the right of center. there is a rod that unlatches the door. you can grab a flashlight and have an assitant lift up the rear hatch lever while you look down at the lock mechanism- you will see or feel the rod move. pull up on this rod. With the door now open you can continue taking off the rear trim cover and fix the latch problem.

My 2004 Freestar rear door is stuck in the closed and locked position. I must free the lock mechanism to unlock it and open the door. The the screws holding the lock solenoid assembly i place are...

there is a rod that connects the solenoid to the lock assy. from inside the van you can move it with your hand or pliers and then open the hatch. you will need to clean up the lock because ther will be corrosion and then use a white grease to lube the whole thing. operate by hand a few times before you close it up. there is an access port by the lock inside the door so you dont need to take the whole panel off.

The rear hatch latch broke inside the door, the hatch is closed, how can I get the hatch open to fix the hatch?

Drill through the trim on the left side of the rear handle exactly in the center (same place the key lock is only on the drivers side) Use a quarter inch bit. If you get it right, you can remove the handle assembly and get to the rods that work the lock mechanism. If you get it right, you can re-use the handle assembly by using a counter-sink and using a tulip screw with a nut on the inside to put it back on. The side near the lock slides under the door skin and has nothing holding it on. Otherwise, your other option is to carefully cut an access hole in the inner panel and make a cover or replace it with one from a scrapyard (good place to get a latch assembly as well!)
Good Luck

My rear hatch button doesn't make the hatch pop, and i can't open it with the key, but i can open it if all the doors are unlocked. any suggestions?

it sounds like the mecanical lock inside the rear door is not working. you will have to open it and take off the whole inside cover, somewhat awkard, and look inside maybe spraying peneteating oil on the inside of the lock and the linkage will loosen it or you will have to remove the clip that hols the lock in the door and remove it,have it repaired or replace it.

The passenger side sliding door won't unlock

I assume it has power locks, so I would look inside the door for a bad door lock solenoid or linkage rod is off. If it is not power, I would look for a linkage rod being disconnected or broken

Hatch door not opening & inside window moisture

pull the rear interior cover from the door and check to see if the latch rod clips are broken or misadjusted. the moisture could be a result of a failed heater core, poor defroster operation (A/C not working, vent door, or blower motor), or the window seal could be defective.
