Question about BMW M5

I have a 2007 M5 with a manual transmission. I took it to a track and after driving it for about 20 minutes a warning comes on saying the transmission is too hot. The car then reduces the number of rpms it will red line at. This went on all day. I can't believe a preformance car like the M5 cannot be driven for more then 20 minutes all out. Researching it on line it looks like many that own manuals have the same problem. My questions are: What is the possible causes? What are the possible solutions? Would putting in a higher grade transmission fluid help? I don't want to possibly void the warrenty but need to do something to get it fixed!

Your transmission, the gearbox that helps you maintain speed, specifically the automatic breed, can be adversely affected by the winter cold and lead to transmission failure and replacement. Keep an eye on the RPM number with gear shifts and note any changed carefully, if your transmission doesn’t seem to shift as often as it used to, takes longer, goes at higher and higher RPMs to shift or just stays in one gear most of the time you might very well have a problem. The one thing you definitely want to do is make sure your transmission fluid is fresh, and can withstand the cold - old or under rated fluid becomes sluggish in the winter and will eventually lead to further problems as the transmission lacks its much needed lubrication to function properly and efficiently.


If you start to hear whines with gear shifts, notice sluggish shifting or otherwise have concerns, and your transmission has already had the fluid changed take it to a service expert as soon as possible, it could be that you may need a new transmission - and having a blown automatic transmission in the dead of winter on a snowbound road is something you do NOT want to experience, especially if you haven’t followed what I wrote earlier on what you should have in your car during the coldest days of winter when you just have to drive in the blizzards of the century. Manual transmission can also suffer in winter, so you need to be sure you have that lubricated and taken care of as well. The turmoil and price of getting a new transmission can be avoided if you stay on top of the situation by keeping an eye on the changes and the fluids it needs. Finally, if you drive a manual - try not to grind the gears in any situation, but you probably already knew that.

Have you checked trans/cooler .On some models I've seen the fan put on backwards from the factory and the fan may also be too small.The transmission has a built in governor to prevent it from reaching a melting point.You can't modify it yet until someone comes up with a way to do it.I would keep it stock and look for a possible re- call for a defective transmission/cooler.

I have a 2002 Acura MDX it has 301,000 miles on it and it has not had to have any major work that I know of but recently it will just shut off while driving and I can't turn it back on for like 20 minutes...


It is your torque converter. The transmission is going. Get a new car. You're lucky you have that many miles on that car with no major problems.

So, here's what you have to do - it's a frikkin tranny reset!!

Drive in manual mode M5 for 5 minutes at over 60MPH, then switch it to M6 for 1 minute, then back to M5 for 2 minutes, then back to auto.
Note: the car is going to sputter continuously when you have it on M5 for the 5 minutes.

That was it - drove around for 30 minutes afterwards and no issues what so ever!! Unbelievable!!!

Hi I have a 2002 525i BMW,two days ago while I was driving the computer in my dasboard warned me that says 'transmission fail safe' and the car kind of slipping however it still runs with no problem on...


That is most likely the case, hopefully it just needs transmission fluid. It does give a warning when the fluid is low. I would certainly start with that.

have the alternator replaced and when you do this also replace the drive belt

If you've pulled a vacuum on both lines from up on top at the canister, then most likely the seals in the hubs are shot. "Make sure you separate the two lines at the "T" and make sure you test from up on top". It's too expensive to replace the seals so I'd install the Warn 60247 manual hubs available on Amazon.com. Cost is $121 delivered including shipping. I just got a pair...took me 20 minutes to install...comes with all instructions.
