Question about 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Get an OBII scan done.(fault scan) Any good parts store or shop can do it for you & usually free. Light is on because a sensor triggered computer that a fault was discovered. It may sound fine, but that light is an early warning that something is "awry" . Get scan done and address issue before it strands you and possibly causes damage.

Is there any codes? check engine light on?
sounds like a cam sensor or crank going out. See the computer needs a signal from these to know when #1 hits to fire engine. Have the engine re=ad with a live data reader to see what is going on
