If your timing belt slips (most likely broke) yes it can break/bend valves. You won't be able to determine extent of damage until to tear it apart. When belt breaks, yes they they "free spin"

How do you remove the camshaft in a 97 geo metro

yours is bad, why not offer CONTEXT to the question>?
which engine.?? 1.0 or 1.3?

the FSM covers every tiny step here.
factory service manual,, get one and read all the special steps.
or at , log in and read, its all there, every day.

The G series, engines, 1.0, and more.
is SOHC, single overhead cam.
all have a cam belt
so in a nut shell,
remove the valve cover
remove belt cover. (lots of steps, im not typing them all out) RTM
loosen tensioner stud, and idler center bolt.
the belt falls off. (timing is now lost)
release all lash adjusters.
remove all came caps.
came is free.

on mine i had to lock the cam and pull the front cam cog wheel.
then remove the front cam seal.

out is easy,
back in , is many move steps (timing) and such.

Camshaft pulley noise in honda odysee

you said pulley, do you mean the cam cog belt wheel?
and how do you know that? a stethoscope at ears?
my guess????
(damage has no limits on machines)
1; it is loose....
2: the timing belt is loose, (never changed at 60k-90k per FSM)
if the belt slips, you can kiss off a good engine. bent valves
or far worse. (no limits)
3: the new belt drifts running and hits the cover.
ask how and why , i have a 6 point list for that. seen them all.

the honda engine is INTERFERENCE CLASS.
the piston chases the exhaust valve closed, (max power and efficiency , is why)
and if the belt slips. the piston can hit the valve and bend them all.
with possible wrecked pistons, or worse, bent rods. cracked valve guides (wrecked head) and pounded to death rod bearings.
ask any engine builder for photos , we have many,, ask.

Compression test on 2000 dodge 2.4l

Most probably... All these modern DOHC engines have interference designs that play havoc when belt fails... valves can collide with piston or between them too. To check without opening engine, you could remove timing belt cover and timing belt, and carefully rotate one cam to feel if it binds or not. But engine starting points to a jumped tooth on belt reinstallation (bent valves would not even allow engine to restart! Amclaussen.

My 98 ford escort ZX2 is getting gas, spark and air and still it wont start. what do i need to do to fix this

If gas and spark are OK, then the cam timing is probably off. Check the alignment of the timing belt: these can slip. If this is OK, pull the plugs and do a compression test.

I don't know if the ZX2 has an interference engine, but if it does, and the belt has slipped, you've likely bent some valves, which will show up as low or zero compression.

Fixing bent valves requires the head to removed and reconditioned.

The Timing belt broke on my 1995 mercury mystique I was looking for a manuel to fix it. thank you

This can be a big problem if it is a Non Interferrance Motor, meaning that when your timing belt broke you engine basically free wheeled during slow down. This can bend the intake and exhaust valves, extended cranking on motor trying to get it to start after the belt breaks can also cause this. You can get a Chiltons manual to have a guide in replacing the timing belt, i can say i know the motor in your car is a dual over head cam engine. These can be a little more difficult to do if you have never replaced a timing belt. May be best to take it to a professional that can test the head and make sure that no valves are bent before you pay for the belt and timing tensioner.

Do the valves have clearance if timing belt breaks, or are the valves bent?

some cars had the 'free wheel" feature if the cam belt broke, thus saving the valves. I do not think that your vehicle had the feature. However, if you gave more info0, ie, is the car running or not, then there might be an easy way to check the head out.

I need a digram of how to replace the timing belt for 2002 dodge intrepid 3.5 single dual cam

Hello trimaineiman: My name is Roger and I will help you. A couple of things you should do is replace the water pump while you have the timing belt off. Should the pump fail later it will do severe engine damage to the engines valves. Next This engine is not a free wheeling engine. Should you put the belt on and the valve timing oi not correct. Severe engine damage will occur. By that I mean Valves in the head will be bent and/or piston damage will occur. Here is a picture of the marks. It is the best i could find. Good luck on your repairs. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer as this way I know it was helpful. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger7ab4161.jpg

Fan belt broke cambelt!

Yes, very true, I should have thought that it would have been sensible procedure, to renew a contaminated fan belt.

I also believe that the cam belt cover should have been removed, to inspect the cam belt, for oil contamination at that time too.
As an oil saturated cam belt would be more consistent to a failure, than a fan belt snapping and getting behind the cover, causing cam belt failure !

You have to seek an appointment with the Dealer Manager, and voice you dissatisfaction with there service, and that the resulting costs would not have been necessary, had my first 2 options above been carried out.
As usual, this smell of shoddy main Dealer Servicing.

By the way, what have they told you the estimated damage is to the engine ?
Normally it would only be a couple of bent valves, requiring, the cylinder head removal, fit new valves, cam belt, fan belt, etc, and reassemble, change oil & filter, & test coolant strength.

Good Luck !

A FixYa rating would be apreciated please !
