Question about 2004 Land Rover FreeLander

When I turn the ignition key to position 2 the dashboard lights flicker & there is a relay clicking noise, but won't start. Checked starter motor - ok, fuses all ok too. Any ideas? 1998 5door 2.0Di

Electrical burnt smell


If you had a short in the starter motor windings and held the key, you'd get a click and a burning smell. That would be the insulation burning off the electrical windings. There's a 40-amp max fuse in this circuit.

I have a 92 sentra lights come on but when i turn key nothing happens. Starter good ,relay good, head lights don't dim when you turn key . Car won't turn over at all


If by lights, you mean the dash lights come on, then ignition switch must be getting power. If dash is not working with key on, check the 30 amp fuse link which powers the ignition switch.
If switch is good and starter is good, the start wire from switch goes to, if automatic, to inhibitor relay (the park/neutral function) and then to starter. There is also an inhibitor switch on the shifter or on the transaxle that turns on the inhibitor relay when key is on and shifter in park or neutral. The inhibitor switch is powered by a 10 amp fuse D.
If you have a manual transmission, the start wire from ignition switch goes to the clutch interlock relay and then to the starter. This relay is turned on by the clutch interlock switch on the clutch pedal.
You can check for power on either relay, the inhibitor relay or the clutch interlock relay, with a test light. Pull the relay out, have the key held in start position. Now both relays would have power showing on two terminals where the relay plugs in. If inhibitor relay only has power on one terminal or no power at all, either ignition switch is not sending power or fuse D is out or the inhibitor switch is not working right. If clutch interlock switch does not have power on two terminals either the ignition switch is not sending power or the clutch interlock switch is bad.
If the relay checks are good, check for power on the small wire to starter with key held in start. If you have power there, the starter solenoid must be out.

The instrument cluster in this van is really a computer display and it has malfunctioned. This is a common complaint on this van and you must remove the cluster and have it rebuilt to cure the problems. Check the WEB for repair sources. the battery is low on power. the lights will still light for a bit longer but your engine needs more cranking amps to turn it over. The clicking sound is your starter without enough power. Have someone help you jump the car. or if you have a manual transmission, get the car moving 5mph+ somehow (push or hill) and pop the clutch out with the keys in the ignition in the "on" position. your car will start right up. if your car regularly needs jumped you probably have a bad battery. if your car looses power while driving you have a bad alternator.

In older cars, the natural wear and tear on a vehicle can lead to ignition switch failure. If the switch is failing, you will probably not hear any clicks from the main relay, which fires the ignition. Check the behavior of the dashboard lights if your vehicle stalls. Alternatively, when the key is first turned to position two, the oil light, brake light, charge light and other warning lights will not function. You can try a test to check the integrity of the ignition switch by turning the ignition key to the 'start' position. As soon as it tries to start let go of the key. Allow it to snap back to the 'run' position and note warning lights. If they go out as the switch snaps back then the switch is faulty. if faulty it will not let power through to the starter to start car. check all fuses first. but sounds like switch.

Lately my 95 Buick Regal won't start when turning on the ignition key, unless I wait a couple of hours - then it may start. What causes this poroblem?


pull your battery cables and clean thoroughly. Especially the bottom ends, they're exposed to grease & road grime. clean all ends with wire brush.

Hi,
Sounds like a bad starter relay. When you turn your key to start, current flows through a relay which in turns supplies 12 volts to the solenoid on your starter motor. As you alluded to , typically the common clicking sound that we all hear occasionally, is usually related to a flat battery or bad starter motor, but as you have had these checked (by a professional?) the only possibility is the relay that supplies 12 volts DC to your starter motor solenoid.
