Question about 1996 Plymouth Neon

2 Answers

I just bought a 1996 Plymouth Neon, private seller, $2,000, about a month ago. This morning I drove the 3.6 miles to the bus stop and while we were sitting in the car, I noticed smoke coimng out of the hood. Smelled the vents in the car, small burning smell, but nothing too noticable, just smelled hot. When I checked under the hood I noticed neon green fluid building up (on the very front piece as soon as you open the hood) then I checked under her and found a nice big, growing puddle of this fluid. The smoke just kept coming out like everytime the fluid dripped it was landing on something and burning away. This is my very first car and I have no idea what to do. I checked oil which was fine and about 1.5cm below the MAX line. My bf told me to just go right home and park her for the day, but I am not one to give up on my new baby! If I could get this figured out before going to a shop I think it would save me a lot of money. Thanks for the help. Pixie

Congrats on your first car. The fluid is probably antifreeze. Depending on where the leak is coming from, the needed repair could be minor...or a major problem. I don't think you should keep driving until someone inspects for the leak further. Could be a hose has a leak or the radiator itself since the leak appears to be up front. Could be a loose radiator cap, or small overflow bottle leak...none of these are to costly to repair. Inspect the water pump for fluid around the seal...the most costly repair would be a head gasket leak...Many good shops will inspect your car for free...call first. Try not to drive far until you know for sure where the leak is and the cause...If your motor runs "hot" while being low on coolant antifreeze...the motor could warp and be beyond cost effective repair. Hope this helps.

You just blew a hose. Let it cool down, locate leak and replace that hose & refill w/ 50-50 mix of coolant(antifreeze) and water.

You need to do an OBD2 engine control module fault code test to see if the fault is recorded in the memory of the computer control module. Autozone and others do this testing for free.

My 2003 Kia Rio has almost 200,000 miles on it... 4 months ago I drove it over 2,000 miles with no problems. Before leaving, I took it in to my mechanic to have them change the oil and oil filter, and just generally check it over... fluid levels, brakes, tires ~ basic stuff.
Good luck!

Pull instrument/ cluster panel and re-melt cold solder joints where circuit board connects to dash connectors. Get them hot enough to turn them bright silver, usually 3-5 seconds each pin.
Good Luck!
