Question about 1998 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

1998 toyota corolla. I got the p0441 code. I thought it might be the gas cap wasn't on (3 clicks) so i tightened it. After about 50 miles the check engine light went off. 2 days later it came back on. What could be the cause of this intermitance ? I don't want to dump a whole bunch of money into this to diagnois. Small leak ? purge valve ? New gas cap ? Does the code need to be cleared ? I've seen so many post. I'd like to get this right the first time

If you want to do all your own work, study
OBD2 Systems

I do not want to be hurful in any way, but
but vey few people are left ,that have stayed
up on the technology and can still work at
home in the driveway

Vehicles do not self diagnose themselves
Codes do not tell you what to replace

Your P0441-- incorrect purge flow ?

What are you going to do? Throw parts
at it? You could change the purge valve
and get lucky, or add to the 2.3 Billion a year
of worldwide unnecessary parts purchases

Your best to have a professional with a scan
tool and EVAP Smoke Machine do the require work,
correctly

That said, I hate to see you do that

I have been doing ALL my own work for close to
50 years, but also have tens of thousands in tools
and study about 10 hours a week year round none stop

I have a 1999 toyota corolla, check engine light came on 2 or 3 weeks ago. Checked with a hand held device, had the code P0441, purge flow problem, erased the code 3 times, tightening or replacing the gas...

if you ignore the engine light , how will you know when the more serious problem of no oil or no water comes up
replace the EVAP cannister purge valve to fix the fault
it can become extremely expensive not to fix an engine light warning

Yellow warning light that says check is on What does it want? In manual it says take to dealer

Take it to a Pep boys if you don"t have a code reader.
They will check out the computer code warning you are getting right noe.
The cost will be about $40 or 50 bucks.
The dealer will charge you three times that much, plus Pep boys will give you a up front free estimate if you need any repairs.
Bet it's the gas cap though.
Try tightening your gas cap and driving the car around far a hundred miles or so.
remember never put gas or loosen the gas cap when the engine is on.
The computer will pick up the venting like it would a leak, thus sending a warning code to the computer.

Check engine light is on, but the car seems to be

The purpose of the check engine light is to inform the driver that the car's ECM has registered a problem. It then stores a code in it's memory that can then be "pulled" by a hand held diagnostic trouble code reader and usually the issue an be corrected. More times than not, the car will seem to be running fine even with the light on because the ECM will compensate for the problem as much as it can to keep the system functioning. One thing you can do is remove the gas cap and put it back on making sure that you securely tighten it until you hear 3 clicks. After driving the car for 30-50 miles, the light may go out. If it does then the gas cap was not tightened completely causing air to enter the system (the system utilizes vacuum so it must be sealed air tight). If the light stays on, take it to a Dealer or trusted mechanic for further inspection. ALWAYS BE SURE YOUR GAS CAP IS TIGHTLY SECURED AFTER EVERY FILL UP OR THE LIGHT WILL COME ON AGAIN>

2001 toyota 4runner< engine light on, code comes out to be - p0441 auto zone said change gas cap, i did, 2 weeks later light comes on again< what do you think?

You can get this code if you don't tighten the gas cap all the way, or the gas cap is bad. I will put all the detail for the code below and what I would do to fix the problem...

NOTE: Do not top off your tank either. This could cause the 'overfill check valve' to fail, and could cause this code.

Definition of P0441: Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect
Purge Flow

Detection logic:
DTCs P0441 and P0446 are recorded by the ECM when evaporative emissions leak from the emissions components
or when there is a malfunction in either the VSV for EVAP, the VSV for
pressure switching valve, or in the vapor pressure sensor itself.
detection cause: Pressure in charcoal canister and fuel tank does not drop or
drop in pressure increased beyond the specified limit during
purge control (2 trip detection logic)

What I would do:
1. Replace fuel cap and reset computer. If code returns, then proceed to next

The next steps require a diagram, so the purchase of service manual to locate the components is very helpful

2. Check for vacuum leaks in ALL emission hoses
3. Check VSV valve operation (there are three; they are ~$75 new from dealer, and sometimes fail)
4. Check for cracks or leaks around or in the charcoal canister (usually requires a smoke machine)
5. check for voltage to VSV's
6. Last resort: take it to the dealer and have them run a diagnosis. This should run between $50-$100.

Good luck!

Code P0441 and P0446. What does it mean?

Both codes are with the EVAP SYSTEM, there are numerous items it could be. A repair shop that does Toyotas or the delaler would be the best to check it out for you. Its not anything that will leave you walking or disable the car.

2005 toyota corolla codes trigered are p0441, 445, 2401, 2402, 2419, what do these mean and how serious is this problem. thanks

THERE IS A LEAK IN THE SYSTEM THAT TRAPS FUEL VAPOURS.
THIS CAN BE CAUSED BY NOT TIGHTENING THE FUEL FILLER CAP, DAMAGE FROM AN ACCDENT OR MOST COMMONLY REPETEDLY OVER FILLING THE GAS TANK.
THE LATTER RRUINS THE CHARCOAL CANISTER.
WHAT MEANS IS IF THEY DO VEHICAL INSPECTIONS WHERE YOU LIVE IT WON'T PASS
