I use 6 to 6.5 litres in my 2800 (non-turbo) engine. Six litres is safe.
The loud noise: Careful please. I have had a big-end (the bottom of a connecting rod) come off while driving - Of course you loose one cyllinder's power and the noise is very bad. Also damages the crank shaft. If the noise does not go away by adjusting the oil level, have the engine checked immediately.

I could be one of 3 things, #1 lifter might loose prime when it sets for a while like overnight, #2 could be rocker a little loose witch is part of lifter that runs on a pushrod, and #3 could be a ristpin witch holds piston to connecting rod a little worn. None of thies are a real big thing unless they get louder or longer in duration. I don't know what kind of miles are on it but what you describe is usely associated with high millage. Just keep your ears open.

SOURCE: 04 Endeavor rattling noise
I had the same problem! I crawled underneath the car and discovered that a heat shield on the exhaust header pipe was corroded and rattling against the exhaust pipe. (Before the muffler)
I removed the portion and clamps and solved the problem. Give it a try.

Hello, I see you have a trailblaber with a knocking noise. It sounds like you have an electric fan clutch issue. Believe it or not your vehicle has an electric fan clutch. It looks just like the older non-electric but if you look on the driver side of the fan shroud that is the wire connector you see. It is an exspensive part just for the clutch but thats exactly what you are describing. It doesn't get louder just fast with rpms. Please rate my answer, Thank you
