Question about 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

The odometers (total and trip) do not work - they are non digital. If it is the "gears" ( described as cheap plasitc units) that drive the unit, are they located under the dash or ???

The speedometer is not something you should attempt to repair yourself, in my opinion. Rather, go to a salvage yard and purchase one from a wrecked car.

My 2002 Saturn L100 odometer stopped working and isn't clocking miles at all.

Odometer
The odometer is an electronic digital display. Digits displayed are illuminated by the odometer backlight bulb. The odometer backlight bulb brightness is controlled by class 2 messages from the BCM to adjust the display for daylight and instrument panel dimming operation. The trip odometer and total odometer will show in this display area. The push button in the lower right side of the speedometer is used to toggle between the trip and total odometer readings. To reset the trip odometer, push and hold the button down for at least two seconds. The total odometer display has six digits with no decimal display. The trip odometer has four digits including a decimal point and indicates tenths of a mile or kilometer.
The body control module (BCM) stores the vehicle mileage. If the BCM fails, the cluster will display the last valid mileage that was sent before the BCM failed. For replacement of the BCM refer to the BCM section of this service manual. Replacement instrument clusters do not require odometer pre-setting before installation. If the instrument cluster is replaced, the mileage stored in the BCM will be sent to the new cluster via serial data, and shown in the odometer display.

Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

Describe how to reset the "maint req" idiot lamp

Hello. Welcome to FixYa. Please allow us to assist you.

This is really easy! Follow these directions:

Turn the key ON

Look at the odometer, and verify that it displays "ODO" and the total mileage traveled. If it is on "Trip A" or "Trip B", press the black stick next to the odometer to read "ODO", and the total miles traveled.

Turn the key OFF.

Press in, and HOLD the black trip meter reset button, hold it in.
DO not release it.

Turn the key ON (do not turn the key to Start)

Observe the Odometer display. The total mileage traveled will disappear, and you will see 5 dashes, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1 dash, and finally, 5 zeros. Then, the total mileage traveled will redisplay.

Release the black trip meter reset stick.

This completes the reset procedure, and it will be back on in 5,000 miles, to remind you of you next oil change
.
NOTE: Newer cars have a slightly different procedure. The reset procedure starts on the "TRIP A" setting, as opposed to the "ODO" setting. Depending on the year of your car, one or the other will work.

Hope this helps!

The odometer does not work. changed it out with other unit and still does not work. appears to be electrical or computer? speedo works fine

Speedometer, Odometer and Trip Odometer are driven by same circuit. Failure of Odometer and Trip Odometer suggests a circuit board fault on the instrument panel. A used instrument panel or repair of yours is probabaly best options.

The speedometer should malfunction too if speed sensor failed. If only the odometer and trip meter stopped working, it will most likely be the cluster itself. I had this problem, but since took the cluster out and give it a nice tap/knock, put it back in and it has worked since. Keep in mind that the VSS provides signal input to circuit that drives speedometer.

Instrument panel removal is not hard if you follow the shop manual instructions for trim removal. I've done it once on my 2.5TL to replace the D4 light bulb. PM your email address and I'll forward the pdf files for the procedure. The Vehicle Speed Sensor goes into the differential, and is what makes your speedometer and odometers work. If that fails, then your D4 light should start flashing, and either the speedometer will be bouncy or not work at all. Perhaps he forgot that 1Gs have a differential, so he said the tranny, but it's in the diff.

Hope helps.

How do I change out a non working odometer/trip meter?

This has been a problem with VOLVO especially the 850 models what happens is the plastic senssor inside the speedometer breaks off and it will tell you the road speed but ODOMETER AND TRIP METER will not work and the only way to fix it is to take the cluster out and sometimes it can be soldered back in place or get a used cluster and replace the unit sorry but it is not a simple fix

Odometer doesnt work

Your speedometer works, your odometer quit. Chances are, your drive gear has given up. The popular story is that you hit the trip meter reset while the car was in motion. While it is entirely possible that that particular event was the event that caused the actual failure, the root cause lies at the VDO factory. The tiny, little, 15 tooth planetary gear that drives the odometer and trip meter from the speedo sensor has turned into a soft jello like rubber over the years due to excessive heat and a corrosive oil lubricant that has turned that essential gear into mush. The separation of a couple teeth from that gear has been inevitable. Now, if you have an electrical(led) displayed odometer, this could be a blown fuse or the sending unit is damaged. Either way, you will have to remove the cluster from the dash to access this problem spot.

My odometer stopped counting. All of my other gauges work. Does anyone know how I can fix it? Thank you

If the speedometer does work and the odometer does you know that the speed senser is working. I think that your model has a mechanical display and not digital, The handy with tools watchmarker perfect repairs in your history you can do this otherwise hire it done. The instrument cluster can be removeded and disassembled. the odometer plugs into the circiut board and persons nailing the trip odometer button can work the plug loose, work the plug ( clean connections replug a few times) then reinstall watching the connection of the cluster to the dash also ( work it too ) Assemble and test. High legal troble for changing the mileage I know of two peaple that are still in Jail

Odometer indicator not working for buick century custom 2001 about 1 week ago, in the middle of a trip, my odometer stopped reading miles. the push button where u can reset your trip miles is not counting...

OdometerGears.com has the gears for you to repair the odometer. If the odometer and the tripometer are stacked you will need and E20= 20 tooth gear and a 16 tooth medium pod. If the odometer and tripometer are split left to right you will need 2 drive and 2 worm gears. Give them a call and they will offer you a discount for the four gears. The total for two gears is $54.00 and for the four gears is $89.00 both prices include the shipping.

95 Ford Explorer Odometer

Check the speed sensor in the transmission.
Being a 95 it might still be cable driven. Disconnect the cable from the transmission and hook a drill to it. Spin it and see if it registers. If it does, the gear going into the tranny is broken, if it doesn't the cable is probably broken.
