Once the dignostic tool is hooked up to the aldl under the instrument panel, then turn on the key, but do not start the vehichle, if everything is working right with your cars computer, the diagnostic tool should be able to retrieve the code, or codes, then refer the code, or codes to the code book for reference to the problem that exists, hope that this has been very helpful to you.

My question is what the cause of the obd1 port in bmw car 740i 20 pins wont read the diagnostic tool?someone please give some advice...

OBD1 is basic information 'your vehicle needs looking at'. OBD11 is the one with the codes. With earlier OBD1, dealerships could use their own diagnostic equipment as codes were pertinent to one make. OBD11 made codes more universal.

We had auto zone check for code and could not get any to tell us what is wrong with the dodge truck?

Take it to a Chrysler/'Dodge dealer who have the correct diagnostic equipment for your vehicle. Equipment used by AZ and others will not read all fault codes that may be present and they are not qualified to diagnose the causes of the faults that are read. They will read a fault code and tell you that you need to buy X or Y part from them to fix the problem. Good for sales but not so good for customers who frequently end up replacing parts that have not caused the issue.

You need a repair shop with the knowledge &
proper tools to work on vehicles

All this free code reading at a parts store won't
help you

You have no factory diagnostic manuals or professional
test equip to work with

You figure it out

Amber check engine light on a 2003 chevy 2500.

This means your vehicle has failed to complete one or more of a series of self-diagnostic tests, usually but not always emissions related. The only way to find out which system has failed the test is to have the Diagnostic Trouble Codes read with special diagnostic equipment. Once you know the codes stored in your vehicle's computer, it will help determine what repairs are needed.

How to read engine cose 1990 ford escort 1.9

On board diagnostic (OBD) was designed on vehicles equipped with electronic fuel injection so you can generally retrieve the codes yourself. No need buying a scanner or running to any parts stores to check the engine light. This system is called obd1 and applies to most vehicles made before 1995 for domestics and 1993 on imports.
Ford owners can check their check engine light using the diagnostic connector located at the engine compartment by the fender near the battery. Getting the obd1 codes need a couple of tools: a 4 inch long gage 16 jumper wire and a 12 volt test light. Both tools are hooked up to the diagnostic connector and when the IGNITION KEY is turned on (without starting engine) the codes will begin to flash in the test light, not in the dash panel. If there is no code, you will normally get code 11 or 111. On Fords, there are 2 test modes, the KOEO (key on engine off) and the KOER (key on engine running). Both test modes should be used to get the accurate evaluation of the stored fault codes.
Most of the codes can be erased or cleared by disconnecting the battery negative terminal for 1 minute and reconnect. Just make sure to check your service manual in case you have electronic equipment such as radio or clock that needs reprogramming in which battery disconnection is not recommended. Finally after performing repairs on the culprit code, always go for a road test to confirm if the problem is fixed.
