Coolant fan does not have power. fan runs when jumped, 30 amp fuse is o.k.

That fan has a relay and if you swap it out with another under the cover of the power distribution center, it may work-try the abs relay or the horn relay.

How does the cooling fan run


The engine has to be at a temp level to set the coolant temp switch to on, located on the engine, block or head, depending on the engine. Once the switch is on it connects the circuit to the fan relay in the under hood fuse box, which power in turn travels to the another fan relay box attached to a bracket on the battery. the power is than transferred to one of the 2 fans. You can test by jumping the relay or powering the correct wires to the fan motor. Easiest way in my opinion is to jump the circuit in the fuse box with a paper clip. look at the relay for the relay on. I recall jumping from 85 to 30.

try pulling S19, 30 amp fuse. if nothing, try Fuse S4. if nothing, follow wire from fan to temp sensor and pull plug there. could be caused by shorted wiring. Also, there is a relay directly under the coolant expansion tank and if it's getting coolant spilled on it, that could be your "short".

there are 4 steps to check and you've mentioned all but one the relay which cuts the fan on'off. At an elec shop you check in this order power to fuse block, fuse & output side, temp sensor, relay, and fan motors. Get a new relay

Hi you can start by chek the coolant fan fuse and the conection for corosion . Allso you can chek at the fan un plug the pluging pout a jump willer wit a 10 amp fuse at the fan plugin at 12V and a jump willer at ground sid at the batery and fan if fan works fan is good if fan dos not work riplas fan. Allso you can worm up the car at normol oporation and test at fan conecter not the fan sid wit test light if light dos not com on the temperateur senser is folty riplas TMPS .

Engine low coolant light on. looked for leak in engine compartment,none found. Topped off tank with red vw coolant. Went a few days and light came on again. This time a little fluid on garage floor....


You can idle the car up to operating temperature to see if the cooling fan engages. there is a fuse for the fan, it's a 30 amp breaker located in the fuse panel mounted under your hood right on top of your battery. Your Owners Manual should have an illustration.

My carhas been over heating and i noticed my fan is not working on my ratiator. could it be just a fuse


Could be a fuse or a relay, could be coolant temperature sensor/fan switch. It could also be that the fan motor has failed. If the fuse is good, test the fan and relay by jumping pins 30 and 87a at the rad. fan relay socket. If the fan comes on, replace the relay and retest. You can also check for 12v signal and ground on the other pins when the engine is hot to verify the temp. sensor is operating normally. If no 12v or if there is no ground on the rtelay control pins (NOT 30 and 87a), the sensor is probably bad. If the sensor is good and relay is good, 99.9% chance the fan motor is bad, even if it starts when relay is bypassed. The motor takes more power to start than to keep running, and can disrupt operation of the relay if it is marginal. Also look for corroded contacts, esp. ground wire connections.

I have a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, that is running hot, cooling fan is not working has a ground doesn't have power. If I jump it out the fan works. What controls the power?


I have the same problem with my 99. I am going to try to jump it to test if it's the fan itself that's dead, which I doubt it is. If it works when I try to hard wire it then it's either the fan fuse, the fan relay or the temperature sensor that is bad. I am thinking I have a bad temp sensor which is what tells the fan to kick on when the coolant is warming up. If my fan works when hard wired then I am going to jump it off one of the fuses that is only on when the vehicle is running. I don't think it will hurt anything to always have the fan running while the car is running.

There are three fuses and two relays for your coolant fan. They should all be in your underhood fuse box. They may not be marked "coolant fan", so check them all, (2) 60 amp , (1) 20 amp, (1) 15 amp. If all the fuses are good, you may have a bad fan switch (temp sensor). It tells the fan when to turn on, follow the wire from the fan motor to find it.

Cooling fans wont come on with out the a/c


First check all your fuses in both the under hood (60 amp) and right rear (10 amp) fuse blocks. Remove the low speed fan relay (in the under hood fuse box) and install a jumper across terminals #30 & #87. These are not marked on the box, but you will find these numbers identifying these terminals. With power at the #30 terminal, installing the jumper wire will send power directly to the primary fan. The fan should now run, if it doesn't, check it's ground wire, if that's OK, replace the fan.

check with a 12 volt test light under dash fuse 10A and possibly a high amp fuse 30 or 40 amp under the hood. The PCM also controls coolant fan operation. Hope this helps
