Question about 1990 Toyota Pickup

Open Question

I have a 1990 toyota pickup and I'm replacing the speedometer cable on it. I have already tried graphite in the cable's connection to the cluster. That didn't solve the noise and bouncing needle I was experiencing. I have purchased a new cable, and I have I already removed the dash and separated it from the cluster. Now I am stuck. There is a metal plate with two holes in it. The speedometer cable is attached to this plate but the real problem is the emergency brake that is passing through the same plate through a hole on the opposite side. How do you insatll the new speedometer cable without having to remove or cut the brake cable. I really need help on that. I would like to know the simplest way to install the new speedometer cable.

Yes, you have to remove the door panel.

Remove the 2 plastic protectors on the front edge, and remove the 2 brass colored screws. Next, remove the push pins from the latch side. Push in, and pull out the whole thing. Next, under the armrest, remove the screw. Lift up the power windoe control, being careful to not break the plastic retainer tab. Remove the screw under the window control. Starting at the bottom, pull out the panel, and, when all of the clips are loose, pull the panel straight up. It is best to do this with the door panel as warm as possible, like in a heated garage. Doing this outside in the cold will break all of the plastic retainer clips; they are quite brittle whn cold.

I hope this helps

Thanks for choosing FIxYa for assistance. A FIxYa rating (4 blue diamonds) would be greatly appreciated.

Just remove the 4 screws and then slowly pull the cluster out and reach behind and disconnect the plugs on the back of the unit and then remove the cluster. The bulbs can be removed by turning them and pulling out.

They both work off of the same cable, so I would say that you have a problem in the speedometer head itself and will need replacing or sent in for repair.

Change the speed sensor if you have the electronic speedometer. If you have a cable driven speedometer, buy a new cable, and replace.

Speedometer quit working.

It is either mechanical or electronic. If mechanical a cable comes out of a socket on the transmission and plugs into the back of the instrument cluster. Either the cable or the cluster is bad. If it is electronic then a speed sensor is attached to the transmission and it sends a signal to the instrument cluster. Either the sender or the cluster is bad. You can get used clusters at junkyards or on eBay, new clusters will not be available for a car that old. You can get new cables and senders at parts stores. You can buy repair manuals on eBay and at parts stores and you can search for repair videos on to see how these parts are removed and replaced. How much money you are going to spend to fix a 500 dollar vehicle is the issue, frankly I would live with a dead speedometer.

1991 pickup makes squeling sound sort of like a fan blade orwheel baaring all theese are ok could ib be the speedometer cable

If the sound you are hearing only happens when the truck is moving, and is louder in colder weather, AND appears to originate somewhere behind the dashboard, it IS the speedometer cable. Usually, I can fix this by reaching up behind the instrument cluster, unhooking the speedometer cable, and spraying TRI-FLO spray lube into the cable. It is messy, and can use up most of a can of TRI-flow, but it is much cheaper than replacing the cable.
