Question about 1999 GMC Suburban

Open Question

My 99 gmc suburban fuel relay melted one of the noids and had internal burning. i replaced the relay and the truck ran fine for a couple days then quit running again. i pulled off the relay and stuck a "spare" in and it ran again. this lead me to think there was a wireing problem at the fuel pump so i dropped the tank and found nothing unusual there except the installment of the new wire connector to the pump. I did not know anything about the old and new wire connecters until i started reading up on potential ways to replace the fule lines i cut to get the tank down. Unrelated to my quiestion of corse but i now realize this wasnt a good idea lol. anyway my quiestion is why the old and new wire connectors to the fuel pump would both be connected and is this necessary? also is it possible that the relay had the melting problem before and thats why the new connector was installed. if so why would the truck run with the melted relay and or why did the problem only become temporarily resolved when i replaced the relay? any info would be much appriciated. thanks. Jason

SOURCE: 99 chevy suburban intermittenly not starting....fuel pump is runn

Unfortunately the fuel pump can still be bad. The pump has a check valve on it that wears out. The pump will continue to run but, struggles to supply enough fuel to start the engine. You can buy a fuel pressure test gauge from Auto Zone or that type of auto parts store and check the pressure. You can purchase a fuel pump from them too.

SOURCE: fuel pump- 2002 GMC Sierra

The fuel sending unit only controls the gas guage not the fuel supply to the vehicle. The pump is twelve volts. If you are not getting twelve volts on the PUMP wires check the fuel pump relay and the key circuit to it. If you have to cycle the key three to four times rapidly to get the vehicle to start check the fuel pump pressure at the regulator for manufacturer specs. An injector stuck open will also cause same problems you are describing.

SOURCE: 97 gmc pickup, 5.7 eng, fuel pump not operating,

What you need to do is check you fuel pressure. Go to a local auto parts store and buy a fuel injection pressure tester. The pressure fitting is on the top of the motor its a 3/8 ish sized metal line and has a screw on fitting like a tire valve does. This line comes up from the back of the motor to the right of the distributor and goes down into the intake. Make sure to have a rag handy to catch the fuel seepage. After you connect the pressure tester turn the key on and off three times and read the gage you should have atleast 58 pounds of pressure. If you have 56 pounds it won't run because the fuel injectors are a poppit valve style and need atleast 58 pounds of pressure to operate.

SOURCE: 93 gmc sierra 5.7 liter engine, injection carb,

you say you replaced the fuse, but does the fuse have power? the gray wire at pump should have power when cranking, or for 2 seconds when turning key on. At fuel pump relay, put power onto gray wire, the pump should run if the wiring is good. if it doenst run then ck for power at fuse while power is on gray wire.

I have a 99 GMC suburban and the heater or AC works... It worked fine until I was screwing with my stereo and smelled burned wire...the blower works.... the fuses are good.

your controller burned up if you have some basic electronics know how its not too hard to fix, or you can replace it. when I say controller i mean the part the knobs are on, has a circuit board on it.a transistor on it commonly burns out which costs a couple bucks at radio shack. also you have to check the tracings on the board which are the wire in the board to see if any burned away, and bypass any damage.I did this on my 96 last spring cause something metal on my radio touched it and fried it. it works fine now.

Hi, I believe you hit the nail on the head. Black stuff in the filter Meaning that there is something in the tank. You have to drop the tank and clean it out. Good luck.

99 gmc wont start

check electric fuel pump operation ( located in the fuel tank ). Occasionally a fuel pump will burn out when running out of fuel, due to the fact the pump runs DRY for about 30 seconds till the fuel stops flowing out of the injectors, the engine quits, simultainously losing oil pressure which FINALLY shuts off the fuel pump. Sometimes TOO LATE. Hope this helps

1999 gmc suburban fuel pump

I had the same problem with my 99 suburban. There was a memo sent out by GM to all of the service shops that tell them when you replace the fuel pump or just desconnect it you need to replace the pigtail wiring harness that connects to the pump or it will burn up the new pump. I went through 3 pumps before I found this out after I replace the pigtail it fixed the problem.
