Question about 2001 Mercury Villager

I am having problems with possible electrical components. The indicators for speed, rpms, gas gauge, are rotating right and left. My vehicle will start, but I can only drive it within a 9 mile distance before, it begins to cause my head lights to flash (like strobe light) as well as the inside dash lights. I have a brand new batter, and Alternator.

Did you have the altenator replaced trying to correct this problem? Many times altenator probems will affect warning lights and gauges, at this point, most customers can't remember if the charge light was on because "all of the warning lights were on". Sometimes a faulty altenator can feed A/C current into the vehicles electrical system. I would be interested in the solution to this problem as soon as it is resolved...good luck.

Can leaky shocks on a 2006 Cadillac DTS cause the traction control light to come on


If the light is on there are DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored in ABS - anti - lock brakes computer . Have codes checked first , something wrong with electrical part of antilock brakes , I know, what does ABS have to do with traction control ! traction control is a function of the ABS control module . Leaking shocks ? clarify , air shocks etc.... Before you start guessing , have it check for codes .

The diagonal circuits are hydraulically isolated so that a leak or malfunction in one circuit will allow continued braking ability on the other.


Important: There is a rubber isolator located under the BPMV and on the mounting studs. The rubber isolators protect the BPMV and the EBCM from vehicle vibrations.

Rough idle in drive, correct rpm


Car idle is rough Inspection Service & Cost A rough idling engine can be caused by a number of issues, some of them are serious while others tend to be minor, but the symptoms remain pretty much the same. The car will feel rough and bouncy when the engine is running. The car will also idle below its regular speed, display inconsistent RPMs and may produce a shaking, skipping or slipping sound when the vehicle is running.
While a rough idling engine may seem to be a simple inconvenience it often indicates a deeper problem within the engine. The vehicle should be inspected and repaired as soon as possible because small problems have a way of turning into expensive repairs. How this system works: The idle speed of an engine is basically the rotational speed the engine runs on when it is un-coupled from the drivetrain and the throttle pedal is not being depressed. The idle speed is measured in the revolutions per minute of the crankshaft.
When an engine is running at idle speed it generates enough power to smoothly operate equipment such as the water pump, alternator, and power steering but not enough power to move the vehicle itself. A passenger car will usually idle between 600 RPMs and 1000 RPMs. A properly functioning idle should run smoothly without skipping or slipping. Common reasons for this to happen:
  • Dirty Fuel Injectors: The fuel injection system injects fuel into the cylinders, which creates a mix of air, and fuel to ignite and burn. Fuel injectors have tiny nozzles to spray the fuel into the cylinder and they can become clogged over time. clogged or failing fuel injector creates a lack of fuel in the vehicle's engine. This can cause a rough idle, it can also cause symptoms such as slow acceleration or the car not feeling as if it has enough power. If the problem is addressed early, it is possible to clean the injectors, which will restore them to full function. If this condition is not addressed in a timely manner the injectors will need to be replaced. Incorrect Idle Speed: While the average idle speed falls between 600 to 1,000 RPMs, if your vehicle is experiencing a rough idle it could be due to an incorrect idle speed setting. A trained mechanic can easily adjust the idle speed, and it should stay at the proper speed. If an adjusted idle speed becomes inconsistent or changes at random intervals there may be a bigger problem that needs to be explored. Vacuum Leak: If the vacuum system has a leak, it can seriously affect the ability of the vehicle's computer to regulate the air to fuel ratio. This can lead to a rough idle and if the problem is not addressed the car may experience slow acceleration and a lack of power. Vacuum leaks should be inspected and repaired immediately. Incorrectly Installed or Damaged Plugs: Spark plugs are responsible for creating the spark that allows the vehicle to burn fuel. If spark plugs are improperly installed or malfunctioning, the idle speed can be affected. The vehicle's engine may vibrate or there may be slipping or straining sounds coming from the engine. Defective or Clogged Fuel Pump: A rough idle can be related to fuel delivery issues. The fuel pump, which is responsible for pulling fuel from the gas tank to the fuel injectors, can become clogged or defective. If this happens the engine will not get enough fuel, which can cause a rough idle, sputtering, stalling and even slow acceleration. Clogged Fuel Filter: A clogged fuel filter can cause similar problems. The job of the fuel filter is to screen out contaminants in the fuel, over time it will become clogged and need to be replaced. A rough idle is one symptom of a clogged fuel filter. Failing Electrical Components: A problem or failure in the ignition system or various electronic components can cause a rough idle. If this is the case, the problem will usually get worse as RPMs increase. Common culprits include the ignition control module, plug wires, coils, and spark plugs. Defective Airflow Sensor: A defective airflow sensor can be responsible for a rough idle. A mass airflow sensor detects the amount of air coming into the fuel injection system and sends that information to the vehicle's computer. The computer uses that data to deliver the proper amount of fuel to the air in the vehicle. Over time these sensors can malfunction or become dirty. One of the first symptoms of a malfunctioning airflow sensor is a rough idle. The car may also accelerate slowly and even stutter or stall as the problem progresses. Dirty Oxygen Sensor: Oxygen sensors measure how rich or lean the gases are as they exit the combustion chamber. Depending on the results, the amount of fuel entering the engine is adjusted by the vehicle computer. The ultimate goal is to maintain an ideal mixture that produces the lowest emissions. A dirty or failing oxygen sensor will usually trigger the check engine light and can lead to a rough idle, lower fuel efficiency and failed emission test.

Have you had the car diagnosed ? Need to have vehicle hooked up to professional type scan tool .Check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Brakes & rotors have nothing to do with electronics of the Anti-lock brakes an stability an traction control systems .Bad brakes & rotors will turn on the red brake light. The brake sensors as you call them are really wheel speed sensors . There is a EBCM - electronic brake control module , wheel speed sensors ,Plus some other thing's.

I remember two kinds 1, rotor, the rotor will speed transfer out, to a small generator, small kind, according to the voltage of the generator had built up and calculated speed 1, electromagnetic induction type, installed on the rotating shaft gear, the outside is electromagnetic coil, rotation is due to the tooth clearance through, get square wave voltage changes, to determine the speed

My gas gauge has been stuck completely horizontal for awhile until lately. Now it flickers like crazy all over the place and i hear a little clicking behind the instrument panel when it does. It goes extra...


Well, considering that the fuel gauge is an electrical device, I would say that is most definitely an "electrical problem". The challenge is to locate where the elecrical problem originates from.

A ground circuit is defiately a possibility. The instrument cluster shares a common ground with many different components. The main ground for the IPC is at the rear of the right cylinder head. This ground is shared with the window motor circuits. Also there is a splice that is shared is is S246 and is located in the main instrument panel wiring harness approximately 37cm to the right from the steering column breakout.
-Or you could just have a bad instrument cluster. The printed circuits have been known to deterriorate and lose contact with certain components, including the fuel gauge.

The speedometer does not work, brake light is on, 4 wheel drive light blinks and ABS light is on. I replaced wheel bearings and all four speed sensors. any suggestions?


If the speedometer doesn't work, I usually look for a VSS or vehicle speed sensor, but on the Ford Escape, the Wheel Speed Sensors detect speed.

The ABS light may be on if there isn't a signal going from the speed sensors to the ABS module, or the module is bad, itself.

I don't know about the 4 wheel drive light blinking, but it could signal trouble in that system, as well, as far as the electronic control of 4 wheel drive or the Transmission Range selector Also, does the transfer case have enough fluid in it?

Transfer Case NOTE: Repair of the transfer case is limited to seals, gaskets and output flange on automatic transaxle vehicles only. In vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, or if any of the geared components, tapered roller bearings, case cover or internal shafts fail, a new transfer case must be installed.
NOTE: The transfer case is sealed from the transaxle and has its own oil pump. The transfer case uses SAE 75W-140 synthetic gear lubricant and holds 12 ounces. The transfer case fill plug is located on the housing cover.

The speedometer problem could also be a bad speedometer gauge, but that is rare, these days and is not indicated by the ABS light being on that says that maybe a signal has been lost to the wheel speed sensors themselves.

I hope this helps to understand what may be going wrong, even though you did the right thing by changing the wheel speed sensors.

Oh, by the way, I would scan the OBD-II computer with an ABS Brakescan tool to see if any particular wheel is still not reading or sending speed data to the ABS module.

May I suggest the Actron Brakescan tool which covers most domestic vehicles from 1996 to 2005?

Rpms drop at high speed, mo matter how much gas applied.


Most times they will attach fuel pressure gauge and tape it to windshield or whatever is necessary, then run it down the road to duplicate conditions when you experience your problem. Perhaps fuel pump is getting weak and cannot supply enough fuel to maintain higher speeds etc. Have had ones that had proper pressure when cool, but after running a while, pressure drops right off. It's going to be a process of elimination right now, as no codes coming up, so If you have good spark at all times, then fuel pressure is most logical thing to confirm next. Can you include which engine as well, it may help narrow things down a bit too.

the fuel gauge sending unit in the gas tank is a mechanical part, but you may have an electrical problem. the needle is moved by an electrical signal. you can check the wires coming out of the back of the gauge, one will run to a chassis ground. make sure that wire has a good connection to ground, first because it won't work right without it and second because it's lots easier than the next thing you will have to do if that doesn't make an improvement. if you see no difference after checking the ground then you need to drop the tank and replace the fuel level sending unit. you will have to remove the fuel pump to get to it so you might want to replace it while you have it out, that's your call. your vehicle is new enough that the decision would be more based on miles than age. hope that helps
