Question about 1994 Ford Escort

I am considering purchasing a 1994 Ford Escort Wagon and the owner says that the CV joints need replacing. Is this a major issue with the car and how much should it cost to replace them?

If the cv joints go the car doesn't.These are the drive shafts that move the car.In the area that I live in it could go anywhere from 450.00 up to 575.00 and that's parts and labor. Now don't forget this is only an estimate for my area and will vary from area to area. And yes this is a major safety issue that should be repaired as soon as possible.

    You missed the question

They want to buy a 17 year old $200 car and invest
as you say twice that for one reman axle. Stupid
    purchase

×

That is silly

The car is worth at most $200 in prime condition

You don't buy ANY Vehicle that is 17 or 18 years old

Tha CV Axles alone, remanufactured cost about
$300 ea

FORGET IT

How do I fix the cvc joint in a 1997 ford escort

CV Joints cannot be fixed, they must be replaced and some heavy specialized equipment is required. Generally this is a job for a fitment center. Shop around for the best prices, the CV joints they use will all probably come from either India or China.

you may have bad CV joints. Each halfshaft has an inner and outer cv joint. One halfshaft going to each front wheel. Check to see if the rubber boots are split and all the grease leaked out.

When driving around corners the front end makes a wroubbling sound. on the straigth aways the sound gone. is it the CV joints? wheel bearings? U joints? or what should I be looking for? 98 Ford Escort zx2...

Does it happen turning in both direrctions? It could be cv joints. from a standstill, turn the wheel hard to the right and accelerate in a circle. do the same on a left turn. If you hear a clicking sound, it's bad cv joints. inspect the rubber boot for tears & stress cracks. once the grease escapes, the joint is no good

How do I change the CV joints on a 1.8TD Ford Escort P reg

Hi mate

With the driveshaft removed from the vehicle.

Undo the the retaining straps on the CV boot.

Pull the CV boot up the driveshaft a little way, enough so you can clean all the old grease away.

Now look into the CV joint an locate the circlip that locks the CV to the driveshaft.

Now put the driveshaft into a vice with the CV joint facing downwards.

Now open the circlip and at the same time strike the CV joint. You can do this with a ballpin hammer if you are scrapping the CV joint. You can get a helper to stike the CV joint with a hammer while you keep the circlip open.

This will release the CV joint form the drive shaft.

Now clean the driveshaft of any old grease and fit a new CV boot if needed.

Now reverse the driveshift in the vice and fit the new CV joint. It will tap on with no trouble but do not damage it. Test it is on by trying to pull it off with your hands.

Now fill it with new grease.

Fit the CV boot to the CV joint and secure it to the CV joint.

Now it is ready to refit to your vehicle.

I trust this solves the problem for you.
