Question about 1996 Chevrolet Corvette

3 Answers

1996 corvette (plain jane - 350 with auto) driven only occassionally. After starting get asr, ck engine, and maybe one more - dealer says these trouble lites due to engine control module doesn't like "low voltage" after start. Real issue is ac-heater, temp used to vary wildly but now there doesn't seem to be any temp control whatso ever even when defroster selected with temp set auto works after two or three led flashes but "auto" on blower" stays at zero. fan speed can be changed automatically. did the error code reading by pressing both sides of temp control. did the re-boot thing by disconnecting battery then also tried cycling the various fuses for a/c and ccm.

mostly looking for procedure to "reboot" climate control system again biggest issue besides no temp control is fact that when "auto" is selected for both climate control and fan speed fan stays at "zero".
going to dealer always frustrating because service writers not particularly good at interfacing andd most forums indicate that while most dealers just plug and play replacement climate control module - underlying problem never solved.

Found that the Air Conditioning/Heater Temperature Valve Actuator
(temperature blend door actuator) was having a problem after all. It's located inside passenger kick panel lower end just above carpet line toward firewall.

I took the cover off the electronic actuator and found that the main gear inside that turns the door had cracked and was "skipping". I guess this resulted in the controller not getting the correct feedback that the door was actually moving causing the error code '01'. Since the door wasn't moving the HVAC system wasn't able to reinitialize after reconnecting the battery leaving the fan speed set to "0" in auto mode. I changed the position of the cracked gear so that the cracked portion was opposite the drive gear mechanisms and system began to respond correctly. New temp valve actuator/blend door motor is on order. Ecklers has it as well as AC Delco.com part nums: Corvette Air Conditioning/Heater Temperature Valve Actuator, 1990-1996
    Stock Replacement
    Fits All 1990-96 Including ZR1
This stock replacement air conditioning/heater temperature valve actuator is manufactured by GM or by one of its authorized suppliers as a factory replacement part. You will find the fit and performance meets all GM specifications. Using stock replacement parts from Eckler's, such as this air conditioning/heater temperature valve actuator, is a sound investment in the restoration or repair of your Corvette.
Do you think this discussion may be more feasible than merely taking car to dealer?

do you think that corvette forum's solution is valid regarding Air Conditioning/Heater Temperature Valve Actuator (temperature blend door actuator) replacement?

Stop by any good auto parts store (IE: Autozone, Advance, etc...) and have them do a OBII scan & have them do a hard reset with scanner. If light comes back, get list if codes/faults and start there. OBCs get easily "confused" with multiple faults (especially when car sits for long periods) RE: Temp issue, check relays and make sure there is no condensation/corrosion on terminals.

It's a 96 so it is a OBDII, what are the codes? Why would you get a CEL if the issue was the climate control? Low voltage after start would be an issue with the ECM since all the sensors and various modules are affected by baseline voltage. Check voltage when the car has sat overnight, is should be about 12.5 volts. Start it, voltage should read close to 15 volts and drop down to 14-14.5 at idle after a few minutes. You should get these readings at the battery and the back positive post on the alternator. If you got the CEL after you disconnected the battery, then you have an issue that will not be resolved until you fix the issue, and you need to have the ECM scanned for the code.

The climate control head has the ability to do a Self test, did the dealer perform this test? I believe that at over $40,000 in 1996 there is no real "Plain Jane" model Corvette.

On the warning indicators, keep a maintenance battery tender on the car when it sets for extended periods and the problem will go away. I agree with the dealer on the fact that low voltage is the most likely cause of the warning indicators. I also own this year and model Corvette, I have all the factory manuals on this, a chunk of change for those even used.

There is no "reboot" it either works or it is defective in some part of the system, many tiomes this is the control head. If you would like to replace the control head here is the procedure to remove the dash trim to get at it, about a 45 minute job.

From this chart - I think you may be misreading the number - 3970010 is possibly the actual number: Which makes the engine pretty old 68-72 350 V8 - 4 bolt main. I included past this number so that you can see that the number you posted doesn't actually exist. And thus my conclusion that the 9 is most likely a 0. So the first thing to do is get the computer scanned for trouble codes. The codes will help direct someone to the area to test.
Most auto parts stores will scan for free in hopes of selling you some parts.

Rsbwales: Would you please tell me where the horn relay is located on my 1996 Corvette, while I have my dash taken out please?

some of these are located on or by the fuse panel and some are in a relay panel either under the dash or under the hood.you don`t have to remove the dash assembly to get access to it.its been a few years since i did one so don`t neccessarily qoute me on it.but this will get you started.the other thing is you can call either a auto parts store or the dealer to ask if they will be able to tell you the location.

Where can i find a wiring harness for my computer on a 1994 corvette?

Try craigslist.com for your area... Look in the "auto parts" section. You can also post ad's there requesting one.
Ebay is another good source. If you need the computer itself you can get one at most parts stores for about $100, then you will need to have the car towed to Chevy dealer to be programmed. They will program it for another 100 or so.
Chevy dealer also sells the cpu, but its about 350 from them and you still have to pay the xtra hundred for programming.
