Most likely it is a pre catalytic converter oxygen sensor. Needs to be replaced. It is not too hard with a (corwfoot wrench). Bank 1 should be the one in front of the vehicle.

Could also be a MAF sensor, which needs cleaning from time to time. You can try this first as it is easier and requires just some cleaning supplies and a can of compressed air.

Well, after looking at the picture it is cleare that replacing a front O2 sensor is very easy and do not even require a crowfoot wrench. Here is the picture. I marked the O2 sensor with a red circle. http://cycleelectronics.com/images/o2sen...
Get a generic one, like BOSCH. It is going to be much cheaper then the one from the dealership. Although you can compare first. If you go with a generic ask for the upsream sensor.

Running lean on both banks? Check intake tubing/hoses for loose clamps and cracks/tears aft of the mass airflow sensor. Could also be a fairly large vacuum leak.

PO171

P0171 - Fuel Trim System Lean Bank 1
YOU WILL NEED TO AVE THE DEALER TEST THE O2 SENSOR FOR PROPER SWITCHING, RIGHT NOW IT SHOWS ALWAYS LEAN, THIS MAY BE THE SENSOR OR THE ENGINE MAY REALLY BE LEAN ON FUEL AIR RATIO, AS FAR AS THE SMOKE GOES THE 2 ARE PROBABLY NOT RELATED, HOW MANY MILES ON CAR? IF THE MILES ARE HIGH THEN REPLACE THE O2 SENSOR ON THE CYLINDER BANK WHERE # 1 CYLINDER IS LOCATED, THE SENSOR IS THE ONE BEFORE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
