Question about Oldsmobile Cutlass

1 Answer

On my 98 Oldmobile Cutlass I can do an oil change on my own and it's got a minor oil leak that would be more costly to fix than it is to just add a quart of oil here and there however, the oil cap will turn up to a certain point and then it won't turn anymore and I was wondering if there's a special way not mentioned in the owners manual to remove the cap so I can add a quart of oil. And yes, I'm waiting until the engine is cooled and I'm turning the oil cap to the left to try to take it off. I know the gas cap is a little funky and I was wondering if the oil cap has similarly got a trick to it?

Okay here is the easiest way to get that cap off ,,,,,Go to the nearest parts store and get a quart of oil and ask them to come out and show you how tpoget that cap off,,you might need to get a new one.And to stop that leak,,,,,,if it is a rear main seal just betweem the motor and trans is where it would leak. Lucas stop leak for motors I used it and it works.

I have a leak that appears in front of van i can't tell what is leaking

Assuming you see liquid somewhere, it can only be one or more of these fluids:
Fuel (gasoline)
Coolant (water/anti-freeze)

Normally, these three are separate, and all can leak. Depending on the quantity of the leak, only fuel is truly dangerous because it can catch fire easily. Minor oil leaks can be ignored for years, as long as you check oil and add as needed. Minor coolant leaks can also be ignored, as long as you keep the level up.

Coolant leaks are typically caused by hoses getting old, and replacing radiator hoses isn't difficult, just messy. Oil leaks are often harder, though the last one I fixed turned out to be trivial (oil filter loose).

Cost oil leak repair

it depends on where the oil leak is coming from... it can range from under $100 to several hundred depending on the nature of the leak. you should keep an eye on your oil level until you have an opportunity to see a mechanic.

Looses oil between changes

How much oil ?? It is not out of line to add a quart between ...say 3000 mile oil changes . Check the engine with a flashlight and quite often you can see the source of the leak. Crawl under the vehicle und look at motor if possible. Oil is still cheap and often it's cheaper to add a quart if the leak is minor. The big oil related costs are if you are trailing blue smoke (rings and valves) or if your radiator water is milkie white with possible oil sheen on it.(head gasket). Everything else is usually fairly minor. Quite often it only means tightening gasket bolts as many vehicles still use cork type gaskets that lose their elasticity over time.

I have a 99 oldmobile cutlass. The inner headlight bulb need to be replaced. Do i need to change the whole headlamp?

No, you just change the bulb. Open your hood, and look down at the rear of the headlamp. You will see a nylon bulb socket going into the rear of the headlight assembly. Squeeze the nylon lock, and turn the socket counter clockwise, and it pulls out. Pull the bulb out, and replace with a new one. Be careful not to touch the new bulb with bare fingers. The oil on your fingers will cause early bulb failure. Use a paper towel or garden glove to handle the bulb.

How much to repair 1994 oldsmobile oil pump drive shaft o-ring

Need to know engine size. Also need to know if this "o-ring" is causing an external oil leak.
If this is a 3.1 or 3.4 engine the o-ring is a common problem. The cost should be 1-2 hours shop time. The o-ring should be minor.
