I presume you are referring to your 'Gas Gauge'.
The gauge could be defective, however it's most likely the sending unit, which is a float connected to a varible resistor or rheostat.

I cannot improve on these links:

You could of couse purchase locally but for reference partstrain offers two different sending units for less than $30.

Gas gage is not working 1987 grand marquis

Fuel level sending unit. I hope it's not, but ya..... it's inside the fuel tank. Also called the float level.

Not an easy task unless you are ready to drop the fuel tank at home.

Some had a small access hole under the back seat so you could get to it easier, but it's not that easy to get the back seat out, and harder to get it back in.

Hope this helps.

My gas gage dont work someone said its the float and that i would have to replace the sending unit is that true and how

Typically, your friend is correct, the sending unit fails the most often. You have to drop the tank to access the sending unit. If your car has fuel injection, be ready for a costly replacement, as the fuel pump is part of the sending unit.... Test the old sender with an ohm meter....

Where is the fuel pump is on an 1989 dakota

in the fule tank. the tank will need to be droped and be vary careful when doing so there is a small line that comes from the passengers side to the tank, a round power plug, 2 fuel lines 1 in and 1 out, the filler neck, 2 straps and a skid plate or heat sheid. when out and taking out the sending unit be vary careful the float for the fuel gage is on it as well

Fuel sending unit gas gauge dont work could that

It can be the problem. Of course the resistor in the interiors gage can be at fault as well. A OHM METER is used to test these parts.

My gas gage is jumping..I was told by an expert that i had to drop the tank to get to theFUEL PUMP/SENSOR ASSEMBLY.Do i need to buy a FUEL SENDING UNIT ?? Or should i look at the FUEL LEVEL FLOATS ??

If you can get the sending unit seperatly you could just replace it, however, I would recommend just replacing the whole assembly since your dropping the tank. Nothing worse than dropping your fuel tank for that only to have a fuel pump go out a short time later and having to do it all over again. While your there you might as well replace both then you shouldn't have to go back into your fuel tank for quite awhile. Gl

Gas gage does not work

I had the exact same problem. It ended up being the float inside the tank. The float was around $90 but 2-3 weeks later I ended up replacing the whole fuel unit which came with a new float attached. I should have just replaced the whole unit when I replaced the float. If you still have the original fuel unit, you might want to consider just replacing the whole unit. I hope you find this helpfull.

Fuel gauge not working

The sending unit is in the fuel tank. Check for connections to sending unit. Sounds likely since it happened after work was done in that area 0900c152800711f7.gif
