Question about 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

My car is loud when I accelerate and the RPM's go high but the car moves slow. I was told it might be the ATF and filter that need to be changed. Does this sound right?

Check level, and if it is low add it to the proper level, but it sounds like the trans is slipping, which is bad-when you drive it, try not to allow it to slip, that is not more gas than it will take. allowing the engine to run ahead of the trans will cause irreversible damage, and you will end up replacing the trans if you allow this to happen. Hopefully it is not too far gone.

When slowing down transmission shifts into low gear at a high speed and will not shift up

Check your service record for the last ATF and filter change.
Recommended interval is 24,000 miles.

Over time the filter can collect dirt and reduce the transmission pump pressure.

Check / top off the ATF and let me know the result on reply.

Slow acceleration, high rpm

This sounds normal to me! The engine will read that rpm when accerlerating lightly. It is the stall of the torque convertor. The oil pressure will always be higher when the rpm's are higher, or when the oil is thicker - cold.

Virbration? That is a different story. Oil won't cause that.

Power steering problem when moving slow or rpm drop

no it is the power steering pump. the pump is worn so at low rpm or low speeds it is real tough to steer. but when the rpm is picked up the steering gets easier.

Also check belt tension but at high rpm speeds the belt would slip and squel real loud. so i would point the problem to the power steering pump.

hope this fixs ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
