Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

1997 Grand Prix GTP Supercharge - On a 'cold start' she powers when starting ignition, revs go up as normal, levels down to idle speed but then 'pluffs' out (dies). She used to start after 3 goes but it's getting tougher to get her to fire without giving her gas to warm her up. What might be the prob? I hear that it can't be a choke as she has no carb...fuel injected...but wont there be a butterfly in there for air/fuel flow? Could it be the ECM sensor? Just want to have an idea, as a female, before taking her into a mechanic and maybe getting Thanks for any help! :)

Easy fix.

Mounted on the front side of the throttle body is the IAC, idle air control valve. It essentially is an electronic choke.
The pintle inside the valve gets gummed up with carbon deposits that get sticky when it gets hot enough...hence your problem after it's warmed up enough.

There are two devices mounted on the side of the throttle body. The IAC valve is the one mounted highest. Unplug it from the wiring harness, carefully loosen the bolts and pull it straight out. There will be a rubber O-ring gasket that will either come out with the valve or stay inside the valve mount. Don't lose it.
On the valve you will see a spring and a pintle. Use a toothbrush and alcohol to get it all clean. Then do the same procedure to the inside of the valve mounting hole on the throttle body. You may also use a can of throttle body cleaner.
Once you've removed all of the carbon deposit, reinstall the valve, with gasket, and plug back in. The position of the pintle doesn't matter when installing, just make sure to keep even pressure on the valve body against the spring so that the valve seats properly back into it's mount. There's only way that it will fit, it just has to seat flat so that it can't leak air.

When starting the car, don't press the accelerator. Turn the key to "run", pause for a few seconds and then start.

And ALWAYS run premium fuel in your GTP.

I would check the idle air control valve before replacing anything.
The computer regulates the idle speed by controlling the amount of air entering the intake thru the throttle body.
The valve could be faulty, or the throttle body can be gummed up.
Is the check engine light on ?

If you have a GTP these engines use a hi output fuel pump. they use a fuel pump resistor located under the battery tray (look up from under the car) This resistor lowers the voltage to the fuel fump when not in boost mode. because of its locatoin it is prone to corrosion. if you bypass the wires and the engine starts and stays running replace the resistor

1997 Grand Prix GTP starts but wont run for more than 5 Sec

is this a supper cahrged grand prix if so check fuel pump resistor located behind right front head light or on fire wall its made of white ceramic has to wires going to it jump the two wire on the connection going to it if it runs longer then 15 min then replace resiustor.
