It is dangerous to prime an engine. Have a fire extinguisher handy. Remove the air filter top. Pour about 2oz of fuel into the air intake and turn the engine over. It will start and run briefly. Repeat until the engine has enough fual in the carburetor or pressure to the injector rails. After it is running you might want to replace the fuel filter and check to see if the pump is delivering enough gas.

2003 Nissan frontier truck. Running fine change the oil, oil filter, gas filter and know it won't start. When it did it back fired twice. There's no check engine light what happened?

Changing the fuel filter releases the pressure on the lines and drains the system. You need to cycle the key several times to prime the fuel lines again or keep cranking the engine till fuel pressure gets to the proper spec.

Emergency fuel shut off

There is no emergency shutoff for the fuel pump. It is controlled from the ECM. There is a fuel pump relay in the relay/fuse box under the hood. But if you have power to the pump, it is probably ok. Having had a 1999 Dakota I had a situation where I was having intermittent shutdowns when driving that became more and more frequent. Sometimes I could restart immediately, other times I had to wait from 10-30 minutes before I could get a restart. I assumed a faulty fuel pump and replaced it only to find that it did not solve my problem. I researched the issue and found that the Dakotas and Durangos have a tendency to have faulty crankshaft position sensors. It will mimic a fuel pump issue since when the ECM loses sensor input, it shuts off the fuel pump. Test the pump this way - in a quiet setting, turn the key to the ON position, but do not crank the engine. With the drivers door open listen for a 2-3 second humming sound from the rear of the truck. This is the fuel pump priming the system to get fuel rail pressure. What then happens is once you start cranking and the engine fires, the ECM turns the pump on full-time. If the crank sensor is bad, the ECM cannot see that the engine is turning over and does not generate spark or fuel injector pulses, so even the fuel pump prime works, if it worked won't start the engine. At least if you hear the prime, you'll know the pump is functioning.

the fuel pump don't turn on every time . first when the pump as prime or if system is prime the pump will not turn on
the PCM give a ground to fuel pump relay for 2 sec and while the engine is cranking the pump is running all the time.
but pcm don't prime each time

Car looses fuel prime or will not start after setting over night without priming the fuel pump 8 or so times but after first start of day no further starting issue

i had the same problem the fuel pump is going out. It will need to be replaced, but a temporary solution, keep a coke bottle of gass in the truck and pour just a little in the carb. that will allow it to start and with the engine running it helps the fuel pump to get fuel to the engin

Hi. Every time you turn ignition on you should hear your fuel pump working for few second. (Priming) if you can't hear it turning on check fuse or fuses and relay first before you check the pump.

need to know what codes where recorded when failure happened..have seen this before..most of the time it is a bad pressure relief valve on the fuel rail...have also seen bad injectors cause it to loose fuel pressure and die...as for your cluster problem it is common for this failure

I am about to change a fuel filter on my 09 ram 2500 Cummings is the procedure the same as the 04 just wait for the electric priming pump to prime the system or no

If you do not refill the filter housing after replacing the fuel filter there is another way to refill the housing.
after the filter is replaced and the cap is secured turn the ignition to run for about 5 seconds then turn to off. again turn to run for about 5 seconds then turn off. Repeat this about 8 to 10 times and then start the engine.
What happens is that every time you turn the ignition to run the fuel pump attempts to pressurize the line then shuts off. That is why you have to repeat the process.
While the truck is running the power to run the fuel pump comes from ecm. Some kind of safety function Dodge has built into the system so fuel will not continue to run if the engine is shut off.

How do I change the fuel filter on a 2002 gmc sierra duramax deisel? And where is it located?

becarfull, the fuel filter os on the passenger side of the engine compartment. after replacing the fuel filter you need to prime the system to get all the air out of the fuel system otherwise the engine will crank and crank and never start. if this happens, you'll need how to prime the system or tow the truck to the nearest Gm dealership.
read the owners manual for help.

Have a 98 gmc 5.7 truck have to prime to start truck.

Sounds to me like either your pressure regulator is bad or you have a loose fitting somewhere in the fuel line from the fuel pump to the engine. When you turn your key to the on position, you should hear the whine of the fuel pump until it builds pressure. When you shut the truck off the pressure regulator should retain the pressure for a certain amount of time but if it don't close then air is allowed into the fuel line and the fuel drains down to fuel line away from the engine. Next time you try and start the truck after it has sat for a while try turning the key on until you hear the fuel pump whine shut off, then repeat it 3-5 times and then try to start it. Basically that is running the pump enough to get the fuel back up to the injectors. Check for loose fittings in the fuel line, or cracks in the fuel line and if all that is fine then replace the regulator.

Hope that helps

i have a 2003 , 2500HD Duramax with 223000km . I was way up in the north country when this started to happen to my truck. I found an old mech. who had to come back into the bush to give a boost because i couldn't start my truck as well. He told me he has seen this before on the 03's. Long story short it was the injectors the dealer replaced all 8 under warrenty. GM sent me a letter later saying they will cover all diesel parts under warrenty for 320,000km and another 6yrs. its your injectors change your oil more often until you get it fixed. To check this park your truck for the day and try starting it if it will not start. Go under the hood and prime the fuel filter (pump until it gets hard) then turn the truck over a little and prime the filter again until hard then start the truck. if this works then get the injectors replaced by GM. This worked for my truck hope it helps. Rick
