I beleive after you stuggle to get your hand back there and loosen it ,,,it drops out threw bottom and the drive axel might be in the way too check the space first before trying to unbolt it.

Just got done replacing the alternator on my 1999 GT3000 SOHC. Most how-to's deal with DOHC models where the alternator is betwenn the engine and radiator. On base models it's between the engine and firewall. Hard to see it, let alone get it out! IT HAS TO GO OUT THE TOP. After being under the car to remove the wires, two mounting bolts and drive belt the rest of the job is done under the hood. Had to remove the #1 O2 sensor, the coil, Master brake cylinder, Loosen the throttle cable attached to the plentum and the the two bolts securing the throttle cable to the firewall (or you will kink it). You will still have to "Weasel" it out past the AC low pressure hose and the heat shield on the catylitic converter. Loop a tie wrap or wire through the threaded hole of the housing (where it was attached to the upper mount bracket) so you have something to lift it out with or your hands will be in the way and all cut up). I cant see getting it out the bottom. Even before you would have to deal with the axle, you have to deal with the lower alternator bracket attached to the engine block which appears that it is sealed against the oil pan gasket and you wouldn't want to mess with that!

Easiest way to get the alternator out of a '97 3000 gt sohc?

Manual says to remove the radiator but if you remove the bolts holding the radiator and push it out of the way it is possible to remove the alternator through the top but it takes some work to wiggle it out.

Need advice on how to pull alternator out of engine compartment not enogh room

You can get the alternator out but you need to remove all the brackets also. And that is a fair piece of work. I think one of the bolts to the bracket is behind the A/C pump to that has to come off also. If I was to do this job again. I would try removing the radiator and see if it comes out the front. Just my two cents worth - good luck.

How do you change an alternator on a 3000gt

it may be under the AC compressor. you will have to take off the front right tire and loosen all engine mounts. using an engine hoist, drop engine to allow room for maneuvering. disengage negative battery cable from battery, thats the black wire.
